The Barista role at Hy-Vee's Coffee Shop department is a vital frontline position responsible for ensuring customers receive friendly, efficient, and high-quality service. This non-exempt position involves preparing and replenishing coffee and food products, managing customer orders, maintaining cleanliness, and embodying the company’s values through courteous interactions. Baristas are expected to operate registers, handle food safely, and contribute to a welcoming and clean coffee shop environment. Besides preparing and serving coffee, baristas provide assistance to customers by addressing their requests, answering telephone inquiries, and collaborating with teammates to enhance the overall customer experience. The role demands attention to detail in food preparation, an understanding of product freshness, and strict adherence to hygiene and store policies. Job Requirements

  • less than high school or equivalent experience
  • six months or less of similar or related work experience
  • ability to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or verbal instructions
  • ability to do simple addition and subtraction
  • ability to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions
  • must be able to physically perform medium work including exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally
  • must have clarity of vision at distances over 20 inches and less than 20 feet
  • must have color vision, depth perception and field of vision
  • must be able to perform climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions

Job Duties

  • provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions
  • smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner
  • makes an effort to learn customers' names and address them by name
  • assists customers by escorting them to products, securing products out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, noting and passing along customer suggestions
  • answers the telephone promptly and provides friendly, helpful service including taking orders
  • takes customer orders at the counter
  • works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction
  • handles food safely and maintains a clean work area
  • reviews food freshness and readiness
  • prepares and replenishes products
  • checks in product and puts it away
  • runs registers and handles payments where applicable
  • removes trash timely
  • adheres to hygiene, dress, company policies
  • reports to work on time
  • washes dishes as necessary
  • orders products and supplies
  • prices products
  • assists other store areas
  • performs special projects as required
