The Barista position in the Coffee Shop department at Hy-Vee plays a vital role in delivering exceptional customer service and maintaining a clean, organized work environment. As a Coffee Shop Barista, you will be responsible for reviewing and filling customer orders for the day, handling food properly to ensure safety and quality, and ensuring that the work area is always clean and presentable. This role emphasizes customer interaction, requiring a friendly, courteous, and efficient approach to service, which helps to create a positive impression of the company among shoppers and team members alike.

This non-exempt position reports to various management personnel, including the District Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers of multiple departments, Food Service Director, and Coffee Shop Department Manager. Although there are no positions reporting directly to the Barista, team collaboration and support are essential. Responsibilities include providing prompt and efficient service, greeting customers warmly, learning customers' names, assisting with their shopping needs, managing customer orders at the counter, and contributing to a cooperative and pleasant work environment.

In addition to customer service, the Barista is responsible for the operational side of the coffee shop, including managing food freshness, preparing and replenishing products, checking in inventory, maintaining cleanliness, and handling transactions if required. Secondary duties such as washing dishes, pricing products, ordering supplies, and assisting in other areas of the store might also be part of the role. The position requires physical capability to perform moderate work and a strong focus on adhering to hygiene and company policies. The working environment involves exposure to typical store conditions, including noise, equipment hazards, cleaning chemicals, and temperature fluctuations.

Job Duties

  • Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service
  • Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner
  • Learn customers' names and address them by name when possible
  • Assist customers by escorting them to products, securing items, loading/unloading heavy items, noting customer suggestions
  • Answer the telephone promptly and take customer orders
  • Work as a team to ensure customer satisfaction
  • Handle food safely and maintain cleanliness

  • Ensure adequate food supply and follow production lists
  • Anticipate product needs daily
