As a Coffee Shop Barista at Hy-Vee, you will play a vital role in creating a welcoming and friendly atmosphere for customers while providing excellent coffee and food service. This position is categorized as non-exempt and involves working primarily within the Coffee Shop department. Your responsibilities will include taking and filling customer orders accurately and efficiently, preparing a variety of food and beverage items, maintaining high standards of food safety and cleanliness, and ensuring that the overall work area remains neat and organized throughout the day. The barista also serves as an ambassador of the Hy-Vee brand by delivering courteous and friendly customer service both at the counter and throughout the store.
The barista must be a team player who works collaboratively with co-workers, managers, and other departments to enhance the customer’s shopping experience and ensure the coffee shop runs smoothly. Key competencies for success in this role include a growth mindset, result orientation, professionalism, and a strong focus on customer satisfaction. Your work will include handling orders at the register, managing inventory and supplies, and adhering to company policies regarding personal hygiene and professional dress.
Aside from routine customer interactions such as greeting customers warmly and remembering their names, you will assist them by finding products, providing recommendations, and handling phone orders. Food safety is paramount, and you will be expected to routinely check freshness and product quality while anticipating daily demands to keep products well-stocked and fresh. Secondary responsibilities include dishwashing, product pricing, ordering supplies, and supporting other store areas as needed.
This position requires the ability to perform medium physical work, including lifting weights up to 50 pounds occasionally and engaging in activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and repetitive motions. The coffee shop can be a fast-paced environment with various hazards like noise, moving equipment, and chemicals, so observance of safety standards is critical.

Job Requirements
- Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds occasionally and 20 pounds frequently
- must possess clarity of vision, color vision, depth perception and field of vision
- must be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear and perform repetitive motions
- employment contingent upon successful pre-employment drug screen
- ability to adhere to company policies and store guidelines
- must report to work on time as scheduled
Job Qualifications
- Less than high school education or equivalent experience
- six months or less of similar or related work experience
- ability to carry out detailed but uninvolved instructions
