The Barista position within the Hy-Vee Coffee Shop is a vital role responsible for delivering excellent customer service while managing daily coffee shop operations efficiently. This non-exempt role is designed for individuals who enjoy interacting with customers and thrive in fast-paced retail environments. The Barista's primary responsibilities include reviewing and filling customer orders promptly, ensuring food safety and cleanliness, and maintaining a positive atmosphere that leaves customers with a favorable impression of the company. This position reports to the District Store Director, Store Manager, Assistant Managers involved with Store Operations, Perishables, Health Wellness Home, the Food Service Director, and the Coffee Shop Department Manager.
In this role, Baristas are expected to demonstrate a friendly attitude with every customer interaction, consistently deliver prompt and efficient service, and contribute positively as part of the team. The job involves greeting customers warmly, learning their names when possible, assisting them in locating products, and handling customer inquiries both in-person and via telephone. The Barista is also responsible for ensuring food products are fresh and adequately stocked according to production schedules, managing cash registers for payment processing, and adhering strictly to Hy-Vee's hygiene and dress standards. Secondary duties include washing dishes, ordering supplies, pricing products, and contributing assistance to other store departments as needed.
Baristas at Hy-Vee must be capable of performing medium physical work, including lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, standing for extended periods, and performing repetitive motions required in a dynamic coffee shop setting. The work environment involves high noise levels, equipment operation hazards, and exposure to cleaning chemicals and temperature variations. The hourly wage for this position ranges from $16.50 to $20.60, depending on experience, reflecting Hy-Vee's commitment to rewarding its employees. Job Requirements
- Must be 18 or older
- Ability to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or verbal instructions
- Ability to do simple addition and subtraction
- Ability to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions
- Ability to write identifying information and request supplies orally or in writing
- Must be able to physically perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally 20 pounds frequently and 10 pounds constantly
- Must maintain clarity of vision at distances from more than 20 inches to less than 20 feet including color vision depth perception and field of vision
- Must be able to perform physical activities including climbing balancing stooping kneeling crouching reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting fingering grasping feeling talking hearing and repetitive motions
- Must adhere to company personal hygiene and dress guidelines
- Must follow company policies and individual store guidelines
- Employment is contingent on successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen
Job Qualifications
- Less than high school education or equivalent experience
- Six months or less of similar or related work experience
- Ability to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or verbal instructions
- Ability to do simple addition and subtraction copying figures counting and recording
- Possess the ability to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions
- Ability to write identifying information and request supplies orally or in writing
Job Duties
- Provide prompt efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store
- Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner whether the encounter takes place in the employee's designated department or elsewhere in the store
- Make an effort to learn customers' names and address them by name whenever possible
- Assist customers by escorting them to products securing products out of reach loading or unloading heavy items making note of and passing along customer suggestions or requests and performing other tasks to enhance the shopping experience
- Answer the telephone promptly and provide friendly helpful service to customers including taking customer orders
- Take customer orders at the counter
- Work with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment
- Handle food safely and ensure the work area is always clean and neat
- Review the status and appearance of food for freshness
- Ensure an adequate food supply is ready and on hand and develop or follow production lists
- Anticipate product needs daily
- Prepare and replenish product as necessary
- Check in product put product away and review invoices
- Run department registers and receive payment make change where applicable
- Remove trash in a timely manner
- Maintain strict adherence to personal hygiene and dress guidelines
- Follow company policies and store guidelines
- Report to work as scheduled and on time
- Wash dishes as necessary
- Order products and supplies as needed
- Price products for customers as necessary
- Assist in other store areas as needed
- Perform other job related duties and special projects as required
