CNS Driver

Child Nutrition Services (CNS) is a key department within the Raleigh school system dedicated to providing nutritious meals and essential supplies to students across various school sites. Operating out of the Rock Quarry Road Office Complex in Raleigh, NC, CNS plays a vital role in supporting student health and well-being by ensuring that all nutrition programs are stocked with fresh food, supplies, and equipment necessary for daily meal service operations. The department adheres to strict federal and state nutrition standards and operates under a work schedule designed to meet the demands of the school calendar, including regular school days, breaks, and summer months. CNS also participates in a rotating on-call schedule to address emergency or time-sensitive operational needs, ensuring the continuous delivery of services without disruption. The CNS Warehouse Driver position is classified under the Noncertified Grade 19 pay grade and operates on a nonexempt status. The typical work schedule includes Monday through Friday shifts with variable start and end times beginning as early as 5:30 am and ending around 3:30 pm, depending on operational requirements and supervisor discretion.

The CNS Warehouse Driver plays a crucial role in the logistics and supply chain operations of Child Nutrition Services. This position is responsible for the efficient and safe delivery of food, supplies, and equipment from the central office and vendors to individual school sites. A primary component of the role involves operating large delivery trucks to pick up and drop off essential items, loading and unloading materials, and ensuring that all deliveries are completed in a timely, accurate, and sanitary manner. The driver also assists with warehouse operations, including receiving, storing, palletizing, staging, and rotating goods in compliance with food safety standards such as the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) system. This ensures that the quality and safety of food products are maintained throughout the distribution process.

Beyond delivery duties, the CNS Warehouse Driver is responsible for maintaining safety during loading and unloading operations, performing daily inspections of vehicles and equipment, and keeping delivery documents for auditing purposes. A significant aspect involves preparing the delivery trucks efficiently to meet daily route demands and ensuring the cleanliness and operational readiness of vehicles. The role requires strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with school staff, vendors, external agencies, and the public to facilitate smooth delivery operations. Physical requirements for the job include the ability to exert significant physical effort, frequently handling loads up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds, as well as working in varied environmental conditions including exposure to weather elements during delivery routes.

This position requires the individual to maintain relevant certifications, including a valid North Carolina motor vehicle operator’s license, forklift operator certification obtained within 90 days of employment, and completion of Child Nutrition Services HACCP training within 60 days of hire. While a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and food service experience are preferred, the essential qualification includes at least two years of experience driving large delivery trucks.
