The Cloud Engineer - Database role at Subway is a critical position responsible for managing and optimizing the company’s cloud database platforms spanning AWS and Azure environments. This role is designed for someone who thrives in fast-paced, high-impact settings, contributing directly to the infrastructure that supports thousands of users and franchise operations. The position requires a blend of technical expertise and strategic thinking to ensure Subway’s cloud databases are performant, secure, highly available, and prepared for disaster recovery scenarios. The Cloud Database Engineer will work closely with application development teams, cloud engineers, and architects to design scalable and efficient data solutions that support business growth and operational efficiency.

This opportunity is ideal for an experienced database administrator or cloud engineer with a strong background in Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, and Terraform. The Cloud Engineer will provision and configure cloud database services, implement high-availability strategies, conduct performance tuning, and enforce stringent security standards across Subway’s data infrastructure. The role also involves creating and maintaining documentation, runbooks, and collaborating on schema designs and capacity planning. Additionally, the engineer will be responsible for exploring emerging cloud database technologies and integrating AI/ML tools to optimize performance and detect anomalies, positioning Subway at the forefront of cloud database innovation.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in technology, computer science, information systems, or a related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of database administration experience
  • At least 8 years of experience in Windows system administration
  • Over 3 years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server
  • More than 3 years designing and testing high availability and disaster recovery configurations
  • At least 3 years using Terraform for cloud database provisioning and management
  • Proven hands-on expertise with Azure SQL Database
  • Capability in database performance tuning, query optimization, and index design
  • Experience applying AI/ML tools for database optimization
  • Authorization to work in the USA
  • Willingness to travel less than 10 percent
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field
  • 5+ years of database administration experience in an enterprise environment
  • 8+ years of experience with Windows system administration
  • 3+ years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server
  • 3+ years of experience designing and testing HA/DR configurations for production database systems
  • 3+ years using Terraform to provision and manage cloud database services
  • Strong hands-on experience with Azure SQL Database
  • Experience with database performance tuning, query optimization, and index design
  • Proficiency with Terraform for provisioning and managing cloud database infrastructure
  • Experience applying AI/ML tools to database performance optimization, anomaly detection, or query analysis

Job Duties

  • Provision, configure, and manage cloud database services including Azure SQL Database
  • Design and implement high-availability and disaster recovery configurations for all database platforms
  • Monitor database performance and resolve bottlenecks through query tuning and index optimization
  • Enforce database security standards including encryption at rest and in transit, access controls, and audit logging
  • Manage database backup, restoration, and point-in-time recovery procedures and conduct regular DR tests
  • Collaborate with application and architecture teams on schema design, capacity planning, and migrations
  • Develop and maintain database runbooks, standards documentation, and change management procedures
  • Evaluate emerging cloud database technologies and provide platform improvement recommendations
  • Coach Infrastructure colleagues on Active Directory and vulnerability remediation best practices
