Job Description
St. Luke's University Health Network is a renowned healthcare provider known for its commitment to excellence, compassionate care, and a strong dedication to meeting the diverse needs of the communities it serves. As one of the leading health networks, St. Luke's focuses on a tripartite mission: caring for the sick and injured, educating healthcare professionals such as physicians and nurses, and improving access to healthcare regardless of a patient's ability to pay. The organization places a high value on the skills, experience, and compassion of its employees, viewing them as its most valuable asset. Together, the staff and leadership at St. Luke's work tirelessly to maintain the highest standards in healthcare delivery and education, ensuring quality services across all facets of their operations.
This role as Clinical Laboratory Supervisor is a crucial leadership position within St. Luke's clinical laboratory services. The position operates Monday through Friday, from 4 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., with assigned bench time based on operational needs. This role involves supervising laboratory staff, maintaining the operations of the section to comply with the standards set by various laboratory accrediting agencies, and overseeing all clinical laboratory functions within the assigned area of expertise—be it Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, or Support Services. The Clinical Laboratory Supervisor is also tasked with serving as a network technical specialist, providing expert guidance and support across the laboratory network.
The supervisor's responsibilities include managing staff in terms of selection, training, orientation, competency assessment, and continuing education, ensuring the highest performance standards. This role is vital in maintaining the integrity of laboratory testing by overseeing the quality management process, ensuring compliance with licensing and accrediting agencies, and coordinating proficiency testing activities. Moreover, the supervisor supports the effective maintenance of laboratory instrumentation, troubleshooting technical problems, and ensuring resources are available for uninterrupted operations.
Effective communication within the department and the delegation of responsibilities to ensure smooth operation during supervisory absences are integral to this role. The Clinical Laboratory Supervisor will also collaborate with the Laboratory Quality Manager to maintain quality management programs that document performance and resolve system problems or service complaints. Staying current with technical and scientific knowledge forms a fundamental part of this position to address evolving laboratory technologies and standards.
This role requires significant physical and sensory capabilities, including prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and walking, as well as fine motor skills for manipulating laboratory equipment. The position demands frequent bending, stooping, crouching, and stretching, and occasional lifting and moving of equipment up to 30 pounds.
Educational requirements for this position include certification or eligibility for certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Technologist (MT), or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Candidates should ideally have a minimum of two years of clinical laboratory experience and two years of supervisory experience. St. Luke's values detailed employment history and recommends submitting a comprehensive resume with all relevant education, work history, certifications, and licenses. The role offers the chance to work within an organization that highly values integrity, customer service, and excellence in healthcare services. St. Luke's University Health Network is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer, fostering inclusivity and diversity within its workforce.
