The position available at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital is a Laboratory Technician role within the Blood Bank department. This is a regular full-time position requiring the night shift commitment of 40 hours a week. The role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about clinical laboratory work and wish to contribute directly to patient diagnosis and treatment through high-quality laboratory testing and analysis. The Laboratory Technician operates under general direction, responsible for performing both routine and complex technical laboratory analyses using established procedures and protocols. This includes chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic examinations, providing critical data that aids physicians in delivering accurate clinical diagnoses.
In this role, the technician will perform a full range of laboratory tests, from simple blood tests to more complex diagnostic procedures. They will interpret test reports, communicate findings to physicians, and escalate critical or abnormal results as needed. Operating complex electronic and precision instruments, maintaining equipment accuracy through preventive maintenance, and assisting providers in selecting appropriate tests are crucial aspects of the job. The technician also participates in quality control procedures, proficiency testing, and keeps current with scientific developments by reviewing literature and attending seminars.
The blood bank laboratory technician position requires someone highly detail-oriented, able to work safely and attentively with hazardous materials, and adept at troubleshooting and calibrating sophisticated lab instruments. Candidates will have an associate's degree or equivalent education and experience, and no prior professional experience is required, making this an excellent entry point into clinical laboratory sciences. Job Requirements
- Associate's degree or equivalent years of education and experience
- No prior experience required
- Ability to lift/carry/push/pull objects weighing up to 50 lbs
- Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements
- Use of vision to identify colors and distances
- Use of hearing and speech for communication
- Ability to perform occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping
- Night shift availability
- Required professional license or certification relevant to the clinical laboratory field as specified by the State of work location
Job Qualifications
- Associate's degree or equivalent education and experience
