Job Description
The California Climate Action Corps (CCAC) is a statewide initiative dedicated to developing a skilled workforce that actively contributes to climate mitigation and environmental stewardship throughout California. This program offers over 400 fellowship positions for the 2026-27 cycle, designed as full-time, paid opportunities for emerging climate leaders to gain valuable hands-on experience in environmental projects and community mobilization. The California Climate Action Corps partners Fellows with organizations across the state to implement projects targeting critical issues such as wildfire resiliency, urban greening, and organic waste diversion. Through these fellowships, participants are empowered to lead impactful projects, engage diverse communities, and enhance their professional development by dedicating between 170 and 340 hours to training during their service term.
One key CCAC placement is the Climate Action Fellow position at the Contra Costa Resource Conservation District (CCRCD), located in Concord, California. The CCRCD is a non-regulatory special district committed to conserving and stewarding natural resources in Contra Costa County through collaborative partnerships with farmers, local watershed groups, non-profits, and community members. Their programs span agriculture, environmental education, watershed coordination, and habitat restoration. The CCRCD prioritizes voluntary conservation methods and community engagement to protect and enhance the local environment.
The Climate Action Fellow role at CCRCD is an 11-month, full-time commitment from September 21, 2026, to August 13, 2027, offering a $35,250 before-tax stipend distributed evenly over the program. In addition, fellows receive $10,000 in education awards upon successful completion of their hours, plus additional professional development funds and essential healthcare coverage. Food assistance through CalFresh and childcare support are available to eligible participants, and loan forbearance options are provided. This fellowship counts on a 40-hour workweek, with some activities extending into evenings or weekends based on project demands.
In this role, fellows will take the lead in fostering community-centered climate action through direct environmental restoration of urban green spaces, creeks, and wetlands, while also delivering climate education within schools and community settings. Emphasizing equity and outreach, the fellows primarily serve under-resourced neighborhoods including Richmond, Rodeo, Crockett, Bay Point, Pittsburg, and Antioch. Responsibilities involve organizing volunteer events to remove invasive species and plant native flora, piloting school-based composting programs, and developing outreach campaigns to sustain volunteer networks. Fellows will also analyze program data to quantify environmental impact and help design targeted strategies to boost participation in stewardship activities among historically underserved populations.
The CCRCD offers a unique learning environment where Climate Action Fellows engage with multiple stakeholders and gain hands-on experience using technological systems to increase transparency and operational efficiency. The organization encourages continuous staff development through webinars, community meetings, and conferences. This fellowship not only sharpens practical skills in environmental project management and public engagement but also fosters collaboration with experts in environmental justice, education, and restoration work, positioning fellows for impactful careers in climate action fields. Candidates should be prepared to work outdoors in various weather conditions and demonstrate a passion for fostering long-term environmental stewardship in vulnerable communities.
The California Climate Action Corps and CCRCD seek committed, passionate individuals eager to contribute meaningfully to California's climate resilience and sustainability goals through this competitive, inclusive fellowship program.
