The Public Defender’s Office is currently recruiting for a Clerk/Receptionist on a Temporary Extra Help basis. This role is pivotal to the smooth functioning of the office, serving as the primary clerical support and the frontline contact with clients, court personnel, and other stakeholders. The Clerk/Receptionist provides excellent clerical support in a challenging, fast-paced, and high-volume environment. This includes answering telephones, greeting visitors including those under stressful conditions, accurately recording and retrieving critical data, and handling various administrative duties essential to the operation of the office.

Candidates must possess a strong attention to detail, exceptional interpersonal skills, and the ability to maintain composure and a calming influence when interacting with individuals facing emotional distress or crisis. The successful applicant will exhibit proficiency in managing multiple tasks, prioritizing effectively, and maintaining accuracy under pressure. Working hours are variable Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., and the pay rate is $20.76 per hour. The position requires the capability to run the twice-daily court-run errands for document delivery throughout the courthouse and within the department.

Job Requirements

  • high school diploma
  • two years of progressively responsible general office, clerical or secretarial experience
  • ability to perform twice-daily court-run duties
  • pass job-related tests
  • background check meeting county criteria for criminal justice positions
  • ability to work variable hours Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
  • maintain professionalism when interacting with people under stress
