Job Description
This position is a labor role within a department, agency, hospital, or school, focusing on the essential task of maintaining cleanliness and upkeep of building interiors, furniture, and fixtures. The hiring establishment operates in sectors where hygiene and cleanliness are of utmost importance, such as educational institutions, healthcare facilities, government departments, or other public service organizations. These organizations prioritize the health and safety of their environments, making this cleaning position critical to daily operations. The work environment typically involves following set routines and procedures that ensure a clean, safe, and orderly setting for employees, students, patients, or visitors.
The role involves routine cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, washing, vacuuming, and general upkeep that contribute to maintaining a neat and sanitary facility. Unlike entry-level custodial positions, this position does not require minor maintenance tasks such as plumbing or carpentry work but is concentrated purely on cleaning functions. Employees in this role may work split shifts to accommodate facility needs and often operate under the direct supervision of a Custodian or Head Custodian, who is responsible for assigning tasks and inspecting work quality. This supervisory structure helps maintain high standards of cleanliness through ongoing guidance and support.
This is a full-time labor position with a salary that ranges from a minimum of $16.25 to a maximum of $17.77 per hour, reflecting the essential nature of the work within the organization. There are no specific education or prior experience requirements to be eligible for this role. However, for positions within school districts or Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), a mandatory employment clearance from the State Education Department is required due to direct contact with students, complying with Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000 and Commissioner of Education regulations.
The cleaning duties encompass a wide range of tasks necessary to maintain all areas of the facility. Responsibilities include cleaning and washing bathroom facilities, sweeping and dust mopping hard surface floors, dusting and polishing furniture and fixtures such as radiators and venetian blinds, and washing marks and stains from walls and various surfaces. Vacuuming carpets and upholstered furniture, emptying ashtrays and wastebaskets, and refilling soap and paper product dispensers are also critical to maintaining hygiene standards. Additional tasks may include securing windows and doors, turning off lights, unplugging electrical appliances, and arranging furniture for various events like movies or programs.
Ideal candidates possess a working knowledge of cleaning procedures, materials, and equipment, including proper applications of cleansing agents. They must be able to follow oral and written instructions carefully, operate cleaning machinery such as vacuum cleaners safely, and demonstrate dependability and conscientiousness in their work. Physical stamina and a willingness to perform repetitive tasks are essential due to the nature of the duties. These attributes ensure that the position supports the overall functioning and health standards of the establishments served, contributing to a positive environment for all occupants.
