Job Description
This job opportunity is offered by a public sector entity, likely a government department or agency, a hospital, or an educational institution such as a school district or BOCES. These entities are dedicated to maintaining clean, safe, and organized environments, crucial for the well-being of employees, patients, students, and visitors. Cleanliness in such settings not only supports health and hygiene but also contributes to positive perceptions of the institution and compliance with health and safety standards. The hiring establishment values reliability, attention to detail, and the effective use of cleaning procedures and materials to maintain high standards of cleanliness.
The role available is a labor position focused on cleaning duties related to the upkeep of building interiors, furniture, and fixtures within these settings. Unlike entry-level custodial positions, this particular job does not include responsibilities for minor maintenance tasks such as plumbing or carpentry. Instead, it centers specifically on cleaning and maintaining a neat environment. Employees in this position work directly under the supervision of a Custodian or Head Custodian, who assigns specific cleaning tasks and inspects the work completed to ensure standards are met. The work may involve split shifts, providing some flexibility but also requiring adaptability to varying hours.
The salary range for this position is from $16.25 to $17.77 per hour. There are no educational or experience prerequisites for this position, making it accessible to individuals seeking entry into the custodial workforce. However, for roles within school districts and BOCES, candidates must secure clearance for employment from the State Education Department due to regulations concerning direct contact with students. This adds a layer of compliance and background verification for such placements.
This role is ideal for individuals who are dependable, conscientious, and physically capable of performing repetitive cleaning tasks. The position demands a working knowledge of building cleaning procedures, equipment, and cleansing agents including their safe application. Responsibilities include cleaning and washing bathroom facilities, sweeping, mopping, dusting, polishing furniture and fixtures, washing walls and various surfaces to remove marks and fingerprints, vacuuming carpets and furniture, managing waste disposal, refilling dispensers with soap and paper products, securing premises by locking doors and windows, and sometimes supporting events by setting up rooms.
Working in this role requires the ability to follow oral and written instructions carefully, particularly related to the use of cleansing agents and equipment like vacuum cleaners. An individual in this position must demonstrate physical stamina and a willingness to handle the physical demands associated with cleaning duties. Reliability and conscientiousness are key personal characteristics for success and job fulfillment in this role. Overall, this position plays an essential role in maintaining the day-to-day cleanliness and operational functionality of the facility, contributing significantly to a safe and pleasant environment for all users.
