The Cleaner role at NJ TRANSIT plays an essential part in maintaining the cleanliness and upkeep of all buses, vehicles, facilities, and properties under the agency's umbrella. This position reports directly to the garage management and is responsible for ensuring a clean and inviting environment for customers and staff alike. The Cleaner’s tasks include detailed cleaning of bus interiors such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and upholstery maintenance; exterior washing and scrubbing of vehicles; removal of trash and litter; and periodic cleaning of facilities and properties. This hands-on role requires physical stamina due to frequent lifting, carrying, and extended periods spent on feet, coupled with the ability to operate mechanical cleaning equipment. Cleaners must be able to follow both oral and written instructions, work cooperatively with team members, and perform duties with minimal supervision. The position may require flexible scheduling to cover evening, weekend, and holiday shifts and readiness to respond to emergencies when necessary.

Ideal candidates should possess prior janitorial experience or related cleaning expertise, a high school diploma or GED, and strong communication skills including proficiency in English to carry out work effectively. There is an emphasis on physical capability given the demands of lifting, bending, and working in constrained spaces. Additionally, successful applicants must pass a pre-employment physical exam and background verification to meet safety standards.
