Job Description
Groveland Elementary is a respected educational institution dedicated to providing a safe and clean learning environment for students, staff, and visitors. Committed to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and facility upkeep, the school seeks a reliable and proactive individual to join their custodial and maintenance team. As a vital part of a welcoming school community, Groveland Elementary values teamwork, responsibility, and a strong commitment to support the educational mission through outstanding facility care. The district provides competitive wages and benefits to ensure its employees are well-supported in their roles.
The Custodial/Maintenance/Custodian position at Groveland Elementary is a full-time, year-round role designed to ensure that classrooms, offices, corridors, lavatories, and exterior school grounds are clean, safe, and well-maintained. This position operates on the second shift from 2:30 pm to 11:00 pm, offering stability with an 8-hour workday over a 12-month period. With a base pay of $21.34 per hour as per the 2025-2026 wage schedule, plus an additional 45 cents per hour for the second shift differential, this role offers competitive compensation. The position is benefit-eligible, further enhancing its appeal to individuals seeking long-term employment in custodial service within educational settings.
The custodian plays a crucial role in the daily operational success of the school by performing extensive cleaning and maintenance duties. Their responsibilities include routine and project cleaning of classrooms, offices, corridors, and lavatories. They ensure that all waste receptacles are emptied, floors are vacuumed or swept, sinks and fountains are cleaned, furniture is straightened and cleaned, and floors and carpets are properly maintained with refinishing and extraction techniques. The custodian is also tasked with disinfecting high-touch areas, restocking consumables in lavatories such as soap and paper products, and managing odor control to maintain a healthy environment.
In addition to custodial tasks, the individual will perform minor maintenance duties such as changing filters, light bulbs, and adjusting equipment and furniture as needed. The custodian also supports facility security by closing and locking windows and doors, checking security lights, and setting alarms to protect the school’s assets. Exterior duties include lawn mowing, trimming, cleaning of exterior windows and walls, and snow and ice removal to ensure safe access to the building.
A key part of the role involves communication and coordination. The custodian reports building maintenance needs to the head custodian, helps maintain positive relationships with all building occupants including staff, students, parents, and visitors, and may provide work direction to other custodial staff to ensure efficient facility upkeep. Strong organizational skills and detail orientation are essential, as is the ability to successfully pass a pre-placement physical capabilities examination. Overall, this position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals who are dedicated to maintaining a clean, safe, and functional educational environment while working in a supportive and collaborative school community.
