The CDL-A Driver position at Cheney Brothers plays a vital role in supporting America's food distribution system by ensuring timely and safe delivery of food and food service products. This full-time role operates primarily Monday through Friday with variable dispatch times, offering an average annual pay of approximately $73,348.74. Drivers return home daily, which is a key advantage for work-life balance. The role involves driving a tractor trailer or straight truck on various routes—including intrastate, interstate, local, over-the-road (OTR), shuttle, and overnight drive and drop routes. Compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and company safety policies is paramount, as the driver is responsible for inspecting vehicles, securing freight, and adhering to safety standards.
This position not only involves technical responsibilities such as pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, completing paperwork accurately, and managing delivery schedules, but also interpersonal skills. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- minimum 12 months commercial driving experience
- valid CDL-A license
- age 21 or older
- meet all applicable state licensing or certification requirements
- clean Motor Vehicle Report for last three years
- pass post offer drug screening and background check
- successful completion of road test
- possession or ability to obtain a current DOT Health Card
- ability to manually lift and use equipment to move products weighing between 10 and 90 pounds during shift
Job Qualifications
- High School Diploma/GED
- 12+ months commercial driving experience
- valid CDL-A
- must be 21+ years of age
- meet all State licensing and/or certification requirements where applicable
- clean Motor Vehicle Report for past 3 years
- pass post offer drug test and criminal background check
- pass road test
- attains or has valid current DOT Health Card or able to secure new DOT Health Card
- able to hand-lift and utilize equipment to move and stack product cases/freight of varying size and weight
Job Duties
- Communicates and interacts with customers, vendors and co-workers professionally ensuring questions are answered accurately and in a timely manner
- functions as a team member within the department and organization, perform any duty assigned to best serve the company
- performs all required safety checks including inspections of tractor/truck and trailer according to Department of Transportation regulations
- reports all safety issues and/or repairs required
- follows all DOT regulations and company safe driving guidelines and policies
- inspects trailer for properly loaded and secured freight
- performs count check of items and checks customer invoices of products that have been loaded
- checks and completes all required paperwork associated with freight accurately and legibly
- moves tractor to the loading dock and attaches preloaded trailer as needed
- drives to and delivers customer orders according to predetermined route delivery schedule
- unloads products from the trailer and transports items into designated customer storage areas
- performs damage control checks on items, scans, and contacts supervisor about removing orders according to company policy
- verifies delivery of items with customer and obtains proper signatures
- collects money where required, loads customer returns onto trailer and secures trailer doors
- ensures tractor, trailer, and freight are appropriately locked and/or secured
- unloads damaged goods and customer returns and completes necessary paperwork
- performs general housekeeping duties in tractor and loading dock area
- completes daily record of hours of service and enters log per Federal DOT, state, and company requirements
- secures all equipment and completes all necessary paperwork at the end of the shift
- performs other related duties as assigned
