This specific role of Route Driver at Core-Mark involves critical responsibilities that ensure America’s food distribution system operates smoothly and efficiently. The Route Driver operates either a tractor-trailer or straight truck to deliver and unload food and food-related products both locally and over extended interstate routes. Working a Monday to Friday schedule with dispatch starting at 3:00 AM, the role demands precision, professionalism, and adherence to safety protocols to guarantee timely deliveries. The Route Driver performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections according to Department of Transportation regulations, maintains clear and accurate documentation, and ensures freight security. Interaction with customers, vendors, and coworkers is essential to provide excellent service, resolve queries promptly, and uphold the company’s reputation. This job requires physical endurance for lifting and handling products, sometimes up to 90 pounds, and the use of equipment like two-wheelers and lift gates. The Route Driver must maintain high safety standards, follow company policies, complete daily logs as per federal and state laws, and contribute to a clean and orderly working environment. Job Requirements
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent
- Minimum 1 year tractor/trailer commercial driving experience
- Valid Class A commercial driver’s license
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Must have or be able to obtain valid DOT Health Card
- Physical ability to hand-lift and use lifting equipment
- Must comply with Department of Transportation regulations and company safety standards
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent
- 1+ year tractor/trailer commercial driving experience
- Valid Class A license
- Must be 21+ years of age
- Valid current DOT Health Card or able to secure new DOT Health Card
- Ability to hand-lift and utilize equipment such as two-wheeler and lift gate
- Physical capability to handle products generally ranging from 10 to 35 pounds and up to 60 to 90 pounds depending on location
Job Duties
- Perform all required safety checks including pre/post trip inspections of tractor/truck and trailer according to Department of Transportation regulations
- Inspect tractor/truck and trailer to ensure compliance with company safety standards and take appropriate action as needed
- Report all safety issues and repairs required
- Follow all Department of Transportation regulations and company safe driving guidelines and policies
- Immediately report all safety hazards
- Inspect trailer for properly loaded and secured freight
- Perform count check of items and check customer invoices of products loaded
- Complete all required paperwork associated with freight accurately and legibly
- Move tractor to loading dock and attach preloaded trailer as needed
- Drive and deliver customer orders according to predetermined route delivery schedule
- Unload products from trailer and transport items into designated customer storage areas
- Perform damage control checks on items and scan
- Contact supervisor about removing orders according to company policy
- Verify delivery of items with customer and obtain proper signatures
- Collect money where required
- Load customer returns onto trailer and secure trailer doors
- Ensure tractor, trailer, and freight are appropriately locked and secured
- Unload damaged goods and customer returns and complete necessary paperwork
- Complete daily record of hours of service and enter log in accordance with Federal DOT, state, and company requirements
- Perform general housekeeping duties in tractor, loading dock area and keep trailers clear and clean
- Secure all equipment and complete all necessary paperwork at the end of shift
