The Medical Waste Route Driver Swing CDL A position at WM plays a pivotal role in the company's commitment to safe, efficient, and professional medical waste disposal. This role involves servicing various customer accounts by picking up medical waste and delivering supplies, ensuring that all federal, state, and local regulations surrounding waste transportation are strictly observed. Drivers operate routes that may vary daily to accommodate absences, vacations, or changes in service needs, thereby requiring flexibility and excellent route management skills.

This position requires a strong dedication to customer service, as drivers are the primary point of contact between WM and its valued clients. The Medical Waste Route Driver Swing CDL A is responsible for the safe pickup, transportation, and disposal of medical waste, as well as the organization and loading of trucks to meet daily operational demands. The role involves the use of technology such as camera telematics, electronic logging devices (ELD), and GPS systems to ensure adherence to regulations and enhance efficiency.

In addition to driving responsibilities, this role requires pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle to maintain safety standards and ensure vehicle reliability. Communication with the Transportation Manager, Supervisor, or Dispatcher is crucial for coordinating route changes, addressing customer concerns, and reporting any issues encountered during the route. The job demands physical activity such as standing, walking, lifting, and handling of equipment under various weather conditions, reflecting its dynamic and active nature.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two years of driving experience, preferably with trucks and box trucks
  • Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) Class A upon hire
  • Ability to adhere to federal, state, and local waste transportation regulations
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Capability to perform physical tasks including standing, walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, crouching, reaching, and handling
  • Willingness to work in varying weather conditions including heat, humidity, and inclement weather
  • Ability to perform vehicle inspections and follow safety protocols
  • Proficient in using electronic logging devices and GPS systems
  • Reliable and safety-conscious driving record

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 2 years of experience preferably in driving trucks and box trucks
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class A upon hire

Job Duties

  • Manages various routes ensuring customers' waste is picked up in a safe, timely and accurate manner
  • Pick up and transport waste safely according to all federal, state, and local rules and regulations
  • Plans daily schedule based on customers' needs by reviewing daily paperwork, e.g., manifest, route sheets, previous VCR, etc. provided by the Transportation Manager/Supervisor or Dispatcher
  • Follows routing software route schedule
  • May prepare and load trucks to service select accounts for the day ensuring enough supplies are added
  • Required to secure waste and material as well as unloading trucks at various Stericycle and customer sites
  • Pick up specified waste from each customer site scheduled for the day, ensuring packaging meets all regulatory requirements
  • Provide the highest level of customer service to assigned accounts on a daily basis, communicating any issues to Transportation Manager/Supervisor or Dispatcher
  • Ensures waste, supplies, and material handling equipment are secured prior to operating vehicle on public highway
  • Ensures that assigned paperwork is completed legibly, neatly, accurately, and completely and returned to Transportation Supervisor or Dispatcher for processing
  • Communicates with Stericycle Transportation Supervisor and/or Dispatcher regarding any changes to route pickups, including address changes or customer readiness
  • Performs documented pre-trip and post-trip maintenance on assigned truck
  • Reports any maintenance problems for follow-up
  • Uses ELD and Geotab to log hours in accordance with DOT guidelines
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities, as assigned
