Job Description
Schwend is a well-established, family-owned and operated transportation company that has been serving the Southeast region of the United States since 1976. Founded by Charles and Judi Schwend, the company began as a small operation and has grown significantly under the leadership of their son Jeff, who now serves as the President. Over nearly five decades, Schwend has developed a robust customer base primarily involved in hauling agricultural products. The company operates from four strategic terminals located in Dade City FL, Tampa FL, Jasper TN, and Elko GA, making it a significant regional player. Although licensed to operate across all 48 continental states, Schwend primarily focuses on routes throughout the Southeast including states like Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky. This extensive reach allows drivers to work within a stable and expansive network while remaining close to home. Schwend specializes in hauling dry bulk agricultural products such as calcium, salt, phosphate, and clay, as well as select food-grade products like flour and malt. The company operates a modern fleet of Kenworth and Volvo automatic transmission trucks from model years 2013 and newer, reflecting a commitment to quality and driver comfort. Schwend enforces a strict no-passenger policy to ensure safety and compliance. The company encourages safety, professionalism, and longevity, making it an excellent choice for drivers seeking a supportive, family-oriented work environment with reliable routes and steady pay.
The role of CDL A Pneumatic Driver at Schwend is designed for professional drivers with a minimum of two years of tractor-trailer experience. The position involves hauling pneumatic trailers loaded with agricultural or food-grade bulk products, executing both loading and unloading processes. Schwend offers competitive pay based on a percentage of the gross load, with wage increases at the end of the first and second years. Drivers also receive additional deadhead pay after 100 miles per load and per-ton compensation for product blow-off during delivery. Weekly gross averages range between $1300 and $1800, with pay provided on a consistent weekly basis. Drivers also benefit from a per diem system that rewards nights spent in the truck, with extra incentives for weekends on the road. Schwend supports its drivers with a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance after a probationary period, a sign-on bonus, paid vacation that increases with tenure, quarterly fuel and safety bonuses, uniforms, and a Simple IRA retirement plan with company matching. The company values a positive work culture and offers operational support with dedicated customers and primary running areas largely within the Southeast. Schwend also prioritizes safety and compliance requiring a valid Class A CDL, a clean drug and driving record, and possession of a TWIC card. Training is available for pneumatic trailer operation, with paid shadowing so drivers can build skills on the job. Overall, this role suits experienced CDL A drivers seeking stability, competitive pay, and strong company support in a reputable, family-run business with a proven history and a focus on agricultural freight transport.
