Job Description
Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. is a premier transportation solutions provider with a rich history of excellence spanning several decades. Founded on the principles of integrity, dedication, and family spirit, Old Dominion has grown from humble beginnings into one of the leaders in the less-than-truckload (LTL) freight industry. Known for its commitment to customer satisfaction and innovative solutions, Old Dominion places a high value on its people, fostering a dynamic, open workplace culture that promotes work-life balance and teamwork. The company’s slogan and guiding ethos emphasize never resting on laurels but continuously striving for excellence by upholding promises to customers, partners, and employees alike. With service centers across the country, Old Dominion presents substantial career opportunities with a promote-from-within philosophy, enabling professional growth and development within a supportive environment.
The role of Combination Driver/Dockworker at Old Dominion is integral to maintaining the company’s high standards in transportation and logistics. This position offers a unique blend of responsibilities that include both dockworker duties and tractor-trailer driving. Employees in this role play a crucial part in the safe, timely, and efficient movement of freight—from loading and unloading cargo at service centers to delivering freight securely to customer facilities and work sites within the designated geographic area. Flexibility is essential, with scheduling potentially including third shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays to meet customer pickup and delivery schedules.
As a Combination Driver/Dockworker, the individual must be detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and hardworking, thriving in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. The role requires operating various equipment such as motorized forklifts, pallet jacks, and manual loading tools while adhering strictly to state and federal Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and guidelines. The driver component of the job includes safe vehicle operation, knowledge of DOT driving hours, inspections, hazardous materials handling, and maintaining a clean driving record. Drivers must pass rigorous medical, drug, and alcohol testing standards set by the U.S. Department of Transportation. In addition to hands-on loading and unloading, the job involves extensive interaction with service center personnel, interpreting shipping documents, and using technological tools like the Dock Yard Management System to monitor freight status. Physical demands are significant, including the ability to lift heavy freight, work in varying environmental conditions, and handle the physical tasks required for freight transport and management.
Old Dominion offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to support employees and their families. Benefits include health plans with a zero premium option for employee-only medical coverage, vision and dental insurance, disability insurance, flexible spending accounts, and a robust 401k retirement plan with company matching contributions. The company also offers life insurance, wellness programs, tuition reimbursement, and training opportunities to promote career advancement. The culture at Old Dominion is one of respect, inclusivity, and equal opportunity, inviting candidates from diverse backgrounds to join their family and contribute to the company’s ongoing success in the freight and transportation industry.
