The Claims Team Manager role at Liberty Mutual is a crucial leadership position within the Commercial Claims division, particularly focusing on Workers Compensation claims management. This position is designed for a dynamic professional who excels in managing a team of Claims Specialists responsible for a dedicated account portfolio. The Claims Team Manager is tasked with delivering exceptional customer service, improving operational processes, and supporting claim professionals in achieving superior results. This position is hybrid, requiring the selected candidate to reside in one of the Western U.S. states including California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, or Idaho, with an expectation to work onsite at least twice a month if located within 50 miles of a Liberty Mutual Commercial Claims office.

In this pivotal role, the Claims Team Manager will guide the day-to-day operations of claims staff, coordinating priorities and workloads to ensure standards of quality and regulatory compliance are met or exceeded. This leader plays a significant part in onboarding, training, and coaching team members to enhance their investigative, negotiation, and settlement skills. The manager also fosters a culture that values continuous improvement, innovation, and collaboration, encouraging the adoption of advanced management tools and behaviors. Furthermore, this role involves building and sustaining strong internal and external customer relationships, acting as a liaison for agents, brokers, and policyholders. Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent
  • At least 6 years of relevant experience in workers compensation claims or insurance claims management
  • Proven leadership and team management experience
  • Strong communication skills including coaching and presentation abilities
  • Ability to work in a hybrid environment and reside in CA, OR, WA, NV, AZ, or ID
  • Must be able to work onsite at least twice a month if within 50 miles of an office
  • Must be able to obtain required insurance licenses
  • Familiarity with claims quality standards, regulatory compliance and claims investigation processes
  • Ability to analyze data and monitor operational performance

Job Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of of Workers Compensation claims investigation preferred along with loss assessment, reserving, insurance legal and regulatory environment, litigation and fraud awareness
  • Ability to get work done through others, communicate effectively (including listening, writing clearly, giving constructive feedback, etc.), get support from above, plan/organize work, analyze/solve problems, and focus on the larger picture
  • Knowledge and capabilities typically acquired through a BS/BA degree (or equivalent) and at least 6 years of related experience
  • Must be able to obtain necessary insurance licenses and/or certifications as needed

Job Duties

  • Supervises the day-to-day operations for the claims staff by establishing priorities, scheduling and assigning work, and coaching employees in reviewing, analyzing, investigating, negotiating and settling claims in compliance with Claims Quality Standards
  • Creates a high performing, results-oriented staff through candidate selection, onboarding, ongoing development, and managing individual performance with regular coaching focused on behavior and technical skill sets
  • Leads and actively contributes to a culture of continuous improvement and ensures utilization of tools and behaviors within the Liberty Management System to foster critical thinking and innovation around problem solving and development of standard work
  • Responsible for building and maintaining internal and external customer relationships, serves as a primary point of contact for agents, brokers and policyholders
  • Hosts and facilitates in person and/or telephonic claim reviews on a continuous cycle and ensures Special Service Instructions are managed appropriately
  • Often called upon to do presentations for existing and prospective customers
  • Provides management oversight of claims files (non-litigated or litigated) within the unit, to include Manager Reviews on open inventory and reviews files to measure quality assurance discusses individual training and development needs
  • Coaches to improve technical expertise within the team
  • Monitors, evaluates and approves, within assigned authority limits, claims reserves, settlements and payments that exceed staff authority thresholds
  • Uses common reporting of data analytics to monitor claim production, inventory management, financial and quality compliance and claim volume trends and results
  • Data used to communicate team performance relating to production, significant achievements and areas for continuous improvement
  • Manages compliance within internal and external parameters, including: Oversees Liberty Mutual/Helmsman state licensing compliance and adherence to fair claims practices
  • Maintains awareness of existing and proposed legislation, court decisions and emerging trends in claims litigation to monitor team compliance with Unfair Claims Practices
