Job Description

Wood is a global leader in engineering and consultancy, operating across the energy and built environment sectors. With a strong presence in more than 60 countries and a workforce of approximately 40,000 employees, Wood is committed to delivering innovative consulting, projects, and operational solutions to tackle some of the world's most complex and critical challenges. The company prides itself on fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace, supporting a culture that values the contributions of all team members regardless of race, color, age, religion, gender, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, or any other protected characteristic. As a forward-thinking organization, Wood continuously strives to maintain its position as a trusted partner in engineering and consultancy globally, making a significant impact on sustainable development, infrastructure, and energy projects worldwide.

The Engineering Designer/Draftsperson role within Wood's Civil Engineering group is based in either the Durham or Wilmington offices of North Carolina, serving as a highly integral position within the Infrastructure Design Service Line. This team primarily supports erosion and sediment control, stormwater management, dam maintenance, and other civil engineering needs for a long-standing client base in the Energy Sector. The role is specifically tailored for individuals who possess strong technical expertise in Autodesk Civil 3D, with responsibilities focused on developing detailed grading designs and civil engineering plans that meet rigorous state requirements. This position offers an employment type categorized as "OTHER," indicating potential for contract or flexible working arrangements, though salary details are not explicitly provided.

As an Engineering Designer/Draftsperson at Wood, you will be tasked with producing bidding and construction drawings vital for successful project delivery. The workload is expected to encompass regional pursuits and active projects, providing a dynamic and varied work environment. Key responsibilities include close coordination with senior staff, junior team members, and project stakeholders to ensure organized and efficient project execution. Additionally, the role demands precision in creating permit drawings for erosion and sediment control measures, as well as proficiency in preparing construction plans using Civil 3D for grading and supporting infrastructure elements. The candidate will also develop plan and profile drawings for hydraulic structures, utilities, and roadways, evaluated through the lens of cost-benefit analysis and compliance with regulatory frameworks.

The position requires a detailed understanding of civil engineering design completeness, adherence to local and state regulations, and the ability to design improvements for regulated impoundments and dam facilities that account for maintenance needs and field condition changes. Moreover, the role involves preparing permit applications and managing agency feedback to align designs with owner expectations. Given the technical complexities and the team-centered nature of the projects, applicants must demonstrate strong collaboration and communication skills alongside exceptional time management abilities to monitor critical project paths. Commitment to corporate safety and quality standards is essential, as is upholding a high standard of product excellence in all deliverables. Candidates proficient in Microsoft Office and with some knowledge of Microstation or Bentley drafting software will have added advantages, although expertise in these tools is optional.

Working at Wood offers the opportunity to join a diverse, inclusive, and forward-facing company engaged in meaningful projects that impact infrastructure and energy sectors regionally and globally. The position offers enriching professional experiences supported by a collaborative team environment, technical challenges, and the chance to contribute to sustainable engineering solutions. It will suit individuals who thrive in a multi-disciplinary setting and aim to advance their skills while making a tangible difference through their work.
