The position available at FedEx Freight, Inc. is for a full-time Driver who will be responsible for picking up and delivering freight between Service Centers and customers, while also supporting the sales process. This role involves the safe operation of tractor-trailer combinations, including doubles and triples, and straight trucks in accordance with company policies and DOT regulations. The driver will perform essential functions such as pre-trip inspections, freight handling using motorized and manual equipment, securing freight properly inside trailers, and maintaining accurate documentation. There is also an important customer service component, where the driver communicates with customers to understand their pick-up or delivery needs and proactively solicits additional business to support sales growth.
This role requires adherence to hazardous materials regulations when applicable, and the driver may be required to perform additional job duties such as tire chaining or stepping in as a road driver or dock employee if operationally necessary. Job Requirements
- Must possess a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with double/triple, hazardous materials, and tank endorsements
- Automatic transmission CDL restriction allowed
- Must have one year of experience within the last three years or completion of FedEx Freight Driver Development Course
- Must possess acceptable Motor Vehicle Record
- Must meet Department of Transportation regulatory requirements
- Ability to perform basic math
- Basic written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to lift/carry freight up to 100 pounds
- Ability to sit, bend, twist, squat, and climb in/out of truck
- Ability to follow instructions and complete training
- Ability to work independently or as a team member
Job Qualifications
- Must possess a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with double/triple, hazardous materials, and tank endorsements
- One year of experience within the last three years or successful completion of FedEx Freight Driver Development Course
- Must possess acceptable Motor Vehicle Record based on hiring standards
- Must meet Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements under section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier regulations
- Ability to count and perform basic math
- Basic written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to lift/carry hand freight up to 100 pounds
- Ability to sit for extended periods, bend, twist, squat, climb in and out of truck
- Ability to follow instructions and complete required training
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Must meet Long Combination Vehicle Qualification standards if operating in specified states
Job Duties
- Operate tractor-trailer combinations, including doubles and triples, and/or straight trucks
- Perform daily pre-trip and safety inspections on equipment
- Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from tractors and/or trailers
- Perform freight handling using motorized and manual equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks
- Secure freight inside trailers using pallets, straps, and rope
- Recoup or repair damaged freight when necessary
- Verify and complete required documentation and reports
- Comply with hazardous material regulations and procedures
- Collect cash or checks for freight charges and maintain documentation
- Follow dispatch instructions and communicate delays, arrivals, and equipment problems
- Communicate with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs and solicit additional business
- Demonstrate internal and external customer service
- Ask for additional business from customers and provide leads to sales
- May perform chaining of vehicle tires
- May perform duties of road driver or dock employee as needed
- Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies
- Perform other required duties
