Job Description

The Division of Administration within the Bureau of Operations/District Operations is currently seeking a dedicated City Custodial Assistant to join its team. This full-time role involves performing and managing the daily custodial and maintenance activities at the district health centers across all boroughs of New York City. The position is citywide with assignments subject to change based on the agency's operational needs. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing all custodial aspects of the facilities, including sweeping, mopping, polishing, and waste management, while ensuring the safety and upkeep of the environments they serve. Additionally, the City Custodial Assistant acts as a Fire Safety Director, addressing any building violations and emergencies, and may take charge of the facility in the absence of the Facility Manager.

This role offers a salary range of $36,129 to $50,285 annually and no formal educational or experience requirements are necessary to apply, making it accessible to many candidates. Job Requirements

  • Certain medical and physical requirements
  • New York City residency within 90 days of appointment or eligibility for specified surrounding counties after two years of continuous city employment
  • Ability to perform manual labor tasks

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Sweep, damp mop, and wet mop office floors, toilets, corridors, lobbies, and other assigned areas
  • Serve as a Fire Safety Director, attending to FDNY citations for building violations
  • Order janitorial supplies
  • Empty waste baskets and dispose of refuse, vacuum rugs and carpets, replace bulbs and fuses
  • Perform shoulder-high and high dusting of walls
  • polish furniture and metal work
  • Maintain lawns and shrubs, operate a low-pressure heating system
  • Enforce safety requirements and protect the building and grounds from vandalism
  • Inspect interior and exterior of assigned building daily, including boilers, elevators, and related equipment
  • Replace broken window and door glass
  • Make minor repairs to masonry, woodwork, flooring, walls, electrical, plumbing, and heating systems
  • Assure proper heat, maintenance of pneumatic controls, ejector pits, and other electrical or plumbing problems
  • Attend to building emergencies as they arise
