Job Description

The Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) is a dedicated nonprofit organization committed to strengthening military families and providing supportive programs tailored to meet their unique challenges. With a rich history of serving military communities, ASYMCA operates various centers and programs designed to enhance the quality of life for service members and their families. One such service is the Children's Waiting Room (CWR) located at the Steven A. Cohen Clinic. This specialized facility offers a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment for children aged 12 months to 12 years whose parents or siblings have medical appointments at the clinic. Operating Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the CWR ensures that children under the care of the clinic’s patrons are supervised and engaged in meaningful activities during these critical times.

The role of the Children’s Waiting Room Supervisor is integral to the smooth operation and success of this program. This position requires an individual who is passionate about child care, capable of managing a dynamic environment, and skilled at interacting with both children and adults. Supervisors are responsible for providing a variety of age-appropriate activities that foster growth, learning, and fun for toddlers to preteens. Beyond engaging children, the role involves modeling exemplary behavior to parents and volunteers, ensuring that the environment remains safe and nurturing. Communication skills are vital, as supervisors must maintain constant contact with the Programs Manager and the hospital's point of contact to address any concerns or issues that arise within the CWR.

In addition to managing daily program activities, the supervisor oversees all operational facets of the waiting room. This includes opening and closing the center, maintaining cleanliness and safety standards, and ensuring proper registration and sign-in/sign-out procedures for children. Maintaining accurate records and safeguarding sensitive information is crucial, requiring meticulous attention to detail and adherence to privacy protocols. Supervisors also lead volunteers, providing direction and oversight to maximize the effectiveness of the team.

Health and safety are paramount in this position. The supervisor must strictly follow child abuse reporting procedures as necessary and promptly report any unsafe conditions to the Executive Director. Facilities management duties involve thorough cleaning routines, including sanitizing toys and equipment to prevent the spread of germs. Equipment maintenance is an ongoing responsibility, ensuring that all play materials are safe, clean, and in good working order. The supervisor also communicates supply needs to the Programs Manager to maintain inventory and functionality.

This role is well-suited for candidates with experience working with children and a keen understanding of the unique challenges faced by military families. The position requires reliable transportation and a commitment to upholding the standards set forth by the Armed Services YMCA. The supervisor must complete requisite training, including CPR, First Aid, and KIT training, and undergo a background check before beginning their duties. Military spouses, veterans, and military-affiliated job seekers are highly encouraged to apply, as ASYMCA prides itself on fostering an inclusive and supportive work environment that respects and values diversity.

The Armed Services YMCA is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to nondiscrimination and harassment-free policies. Employment decisions are based solely on legitimate business needs and individual qualifications. ASYMCA promotes an environment where all employees, regardless of age, race, color, religion, family status, or other protected characteristics, can thrive. The organization also employs artificial intelligence tools minimally in its hiring process to improve efficiency and communication, but all decisions are ultimately made through human evaluation to ensure fairness and accuracy.
