Job Description

This position is offered at a designated training site within the Huntsville City School System and is a temporary placement lasting one school year. Candidates selected for this role should be aware that following the first year, successful participants will likely be transferred to a different location depending on staffing needs and the availability of open positions within the district. The Huntsville City School System, located in Alabama, is committed to providing high quality educational and nutritional services to its student population through various programs including the Child Nutrition Program (CNP).

The Child Nutrition Program Supervisor is tasked with overseeing the daily operations of an assigned school kitchen to deliver nutritious food services that comply with district, state, and federal regulations. This role is critical in ensuring that all food services meet established nutritional standards and operate efficiently within the guidelines of the National School Lunch Program, the Child and Adult Care Food Program, and the Summer Food Service Program. Reporting directly to the CNP Coordinator, the supervisor will manage the school CNP leads and CNP workers, ensuring smooth operations and promoting a positive work environment.

This temporary supervisory role involves a diverse range of responsibilities including team supervision, food safety adherence, inventory management, and compliance monitoring with USDA standards such as the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. Candidates will be expected to open and close school kitchens daily, manage incoming USDA commodities to ensure quality and compliance, and maintain accurate inventory. The position also requires frequent communication with school staff, parents, and students to provide information about CNP services and programs.

In addition to operational duties, the supervisor will support departmental policy enforcement related to nutrition, sanitation, safety, food preparation, service, and kitchen equipment operation. This includes preparing and reviewing various reports to document program activities and financial summaries, as well as handling daily cash deposits and coordinating personnel schedules to ensure adequate shift coverage.

Participation in professional development opportunities such as training seminars, workshops, and conferences is expected to support continuous learning and improvement in food service management. The role may also require performing other food service functions like serving, cooking, baking, and cashiering to provide comprehensive coverage of kitchen operations.

Supervisory responsibilities extend to hiring recommendations, employee performance appraisals, and ensuring staff are trained adequately to fulfill their roles effectively. The supervisor will be responsible for developing and improving operating procedures to enhance efficiency and resource utilization within the school kitchen environment.

This position is a nine-month role with salary recommendations approved by the Superintendent and Board of Education.
