The Chief Engineer position at the Holiday Inn New Orleans Airport North is a critical leadership role responsible for ensuring that the entire physical facility is maintained to the highest standards. This includes managing all mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems and maintaining equipment in compliance with energy conservation and preventive maintenance programs. The Chief Engineer oversees every component of the hotel’s infrastructure to guarantee safe operation and compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations. They lead the engineering team in maintaining guest areas, ensuring an attractive and safe environment that positively impacts guest satisfaction. In addition, the role includes managing rehabilitation and expansion projects that support the hotel’s ongoing growth and modernization. This role requires hands-on expertise in a range of systems including boilers, electrical, and HVAC equipment, combined with supervisory skills to guide and train engineering staff. The position requires a seasoned professional with at least five years of experience as a journey mechanic or engineer in a class A hotel or a related industry, and at least two years as a head or assistant chief engineer. Holding appropriate licenses such as a first-class boiler license and EPA certification for refrigerants is essential. The successful candidate must be skilled in using computers and software relevant to engineering operations and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. This role demands the ability to work in physically demanding conditions and thrive in high-pressure situations, while demonstrating excellent problem-solving skills and initiative. Job Requirements
- Graduation from high school
- Five years experience as a journey mechanic or engineer with a class A hotel or related industry
- Two years experience as a head or assistant chief engineer
- 1st class boiler license required
- EPA certified in safe use and handling of refrigerants
- Ability to lift and move heavy objects up to 100 pounds
- Flexible and long working hours
- Excellent English communication skills
- Ability to work in high-pressure situations
- Ability to use computers and software programs associated with engineering
- Ability to follow safety standards and regulations
- Must comply with all local, state and federal laws
Job Qualifications
- Graduation from high school
- Completion of an apprenticeship and/or advanced training program for operating engineers recognized by the industry
- Five years’ experience as a journey mechanic or engineer in a class A hotel or related industry
- Two years’ experience as a head or assistant chief engineer
- Possession of required licenses such as an electrician’s license and a 1st class boiler license
- EPA certification in the safe use and handling of refrigerants
- Excellent knowledge of electrical, mechanical, HVAC systems and boilers
- Knowledge of public construction, building systems, and related permits
- Proficiency in engineering-related computer software
- Skilled in safe use of tools, equipment, materials, and chemicals
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to analyze systems design and performance
- Ability to instruct and support team members
- Ability to translate technical information into layperson’s terms
- Preferred additional language skills
Job Duties
- Approach all encounters with guests and employees in a friendly, service-oriented manner
- Maintain regular attendance in compliance with hotel standards as required by scheduling
- Maintain high standards of personal appearance and grooming including wearing proper uniform and nametag
- Comply with hospitality service standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient operations
- Maintain a warm and friendly demeanor at all times
- Assist in developing and implementing plans to maintain property, equipment, grounds, and other assets in safe and acceptable repair
- Ensure hotel compliance with all local, state, and federal laws
- Inspect, test, and certify all emergency and life safety equipment and systems per hotel standards
- Supervise engineers and ensure proper training in customer service, standard operating procedures and loss prevention
- Participate actively in energy conservation programs
- Review guest and meeting planner comment cards to identify and correct problems timely
- Ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
- Assist with administration of vendor contracts controlled by the Engineering Department
- Assist in budgeting including wages, salaries, expenses, and energy budgets
- Participate in financial forecasts and monthly profit/loss meetings
- Assist with special projects and renovations
- Repair and program hotel electronic lock system
- Maintain supply of materials and equipment for day-to-day operations
- Maintain organized administrative and filing systems for correspondence and reports
- Maintain inventory and storage systems for tools, products, materials, and equipment
- Respond immediately to hotel emergencies requiring Chief Engineer skills
- Coordinate and supervise special guest requests for room and meeting space modifications
- Assist in scheduling preventive maintenance tasks
- Attend meetings and training as required by management
- Perform other duties as requested by management
