Job Description

Newhouse is a leading nonprofit organization based in Kansas City, Missouri, dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic violence by helping them overcome the impacts of trauma through comprehensive services and systems change. Established with a commitment to innovation, collaboration, and excellence, Newhouse has grown significantly in recent years, expanding its reach and increasing annual revenue from approximately $2.3 million to $8 million within seven years, and serving 165% more individuals. The organization operates with values centered on survivor-centered innovation, transformation, and belonging, making it a pioneer in its field. Newhouse is currently preparing to embark on a major transformation with plans to develop a $35 million Community Impact Campus, which will redefine service delivery for survivors and their families and extend the organization’s profound impact for future generations. This growth and vision underscore Newhouse’s leadership role in the nonprofit sector and its commitment to healing, safety, and self-sufficiency for survivors.

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) position at Newhouse is a pivotal leadership role uniquely tailored for a dynamic and strategic professional who will drive fundraising and philanthropic efforts during this transformative expansion phase. Reporting directly to the CEO and serving on the Executive Leadership Team, the CDO will spearhead the design, implementation, and management of a comprehensive fundraising strategy that supports Newhouse’s ambitious growth goals and the realization of the Community Impact Campus. This role demands a senior fundraising leader who excels in securing major gifts, cultivating corporate partnerships, orchestrating annual giving campaigns, and managing signature fundraising events. The CDO will collaborate closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, Chief Marketing Officer, Chief Financial Officer, volunteers, donors, and community leaders to foster a culture of philanthropy aligned with the organization’s mission and values.

The successful candidate will lead and mentor a talented development team, ensuring effective operations, donor stewardship, and the use of CRM systems to enhance fundraising processes and reporting. They will play a critical role in nurturing relationships with key stakeholders to inspire sustained philanthropic investment, acting as Newhouse’s philanthropic ambassador and thought partner to the CEO. With a keen focus on strategic growth, this leader will drive innovative fundraising initiatives, support capital campaigns, and oversee budget forecasting in partnership with finance teams. Additionally, the role requires a high level of cultural sensitivity, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work flexibly to accommodate occasional events and donor engagement activities beyond standard business hours.

Offering a competitive salary range of $120,000 to $135,000 along with a generous benefits package that includes health and dental insurance, a 401(k) plan with matching contributions, paid time off starting at six weeks annually, an employee assistance program, flexible scheduling, and even opportunities for sabbaticals, Newhouse values both the professional and personal well-being of its staff. The organization’s hybrid work arrangement balances flexibility with collaboration in the vibrant Kansas City community.
