The role available is a part-time Chef/Cook position focused on meeting the dining needs of the senior residents at Bethesda Senior Living Communities. This position plays a critical role in overseeing all aspects of meal preparation while ensuring that meals are nutritious, flavorful, and presented professionally. It requires a dedicated individual who can work flexible day, evening, and weekend shifts to accommodate the dining schedule of the community. The Chef/Cook is responsible for cooking meals according to established recipes and menus, assisting in menu planning to accommodate residents' nutritional requirements and preferences, and presenting meals in an appealing manner that satisfies both the eye and palate.
Beyond cooking duties, the role involves significant sanitary responsibilities, including cleaning kitchen equipment, maintaining safe food storage practices, and adhering to health and safety regulations. The Chef/Cook must maintain an organized, clean, and safe kitchen environment while supporting special meal preparations and collaborating closely with the Culinary Services Director. The position demands strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with residents, staff, and guests, demonstrating compassion and understanding toward the elderly population served. Additionally, it requires a positive customer service approach, honesty, and integrity.
This position does not include managerial duties, focusing instead on hands-on cooking and kitchen maintenance. Candidates must be knowledgeable about menu planning for geriatric residents, including restricted diets like diabetic, low fat, and salt-free options. They must also be skilled cooks and bakers with the ability to follow recipes precisely and manage workload independently, prioritizing tasks as emergencies arise. The job demands physical stamina to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment with varying temperatures, requiring frequent lifting, reaching, bending, and standing. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, with culinary training preferred, and proper health certification must be maintained. As part of Bethesda Senior Living Communities, the applicant is expected to embody a servant leadership attitude aligning with the organization's mission to provide outstanding senior care and support.

Job Requirements
- Education that provides skills to read, comprehend, and follow recipes and procedures
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Culinary training preferred
- Appropriate health certification as required by local, state, and federal health departments
- Ability to work flexible day, evening, and weekend shifts
- Physical ability to lift and carry a minimum of 20 pounds frequently and 50 pounds occasionally
- Ability to perform full range reaching activities
- Ability to stand for long periods and move between kitchen and dining areas carrying trays, plates, silverware, and accessories
- Willingness to follow sanitary and safety guidelines
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Compassionate attitude towards elderly residents
Job Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Culinary training preferred
- Possession of appropriate health certification as required by local, state, and federal health departments
- Knowledge of menu planning for geriatric residents
- Excellent cooking and baking skills
- Knowledge of restricted diets such as diabetic, low fat, salt free, liquid, etc.
- Interpersonal skills to communicate with residents and staff
- Compassion for the elderly
- Knowledge of hazardous materials guidelines (MSDS sheets)
- Ability to work independently and prioritize workload
- Ability to expand recipes

Job Duties
- Cooks meals according to established recipes and menus
- Assists Culinary Services Director in creating menus that meet the residents' nutritional needs and accommodates residents' food preferences
- Presents meals that are pleasing to the eye and palate
- Sets up kitchen and preps according to each day's menu, preps for next day
- Cleans dishes, floors, walls and kitchen equipment maintaining sanitary guidelines according to community’s policies and procedures
- Maintains an organized, clean, and safe storeroom, coolers, and kitchen
- Assists in planning and cooking of special meals
- Maintains proper temperatures of steam table, dishwasher, refrigerator and freezer
- Maintains confidentiality of residents’ personal information in and out of the community and protects and supports residents’ rights
- Maintains a professional appearance by wearing clean, pressed uniform and a demeanor that encourages a positive nurturing environment for the residents, families, vendors, and guests
- Maintains a positive customer service environment and practices honesty and integrity in all aspects of performance
- Ensures adequate daily coverage for meal service by communicating with the Culinary Services Director and/or Host/Hostess, to include taking resident orders for meals, providing drink refills according to residents’ / guests’ requests, assists with the cleaning, resetting and preparation of the dining room in-between mealtimes
- Performs all other duties as assigned or required
