Job Description
Young Life is a well-established Christian ministry organization dedicated to evangelism and discipleship among young people. Founded with the mission to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to life, Young Life operates camps and programs that foster spiritual growth, leadership development, and community connection. The organization is committed to maintaining its Christian core by employing staff members and volunteers who share a personal faith in Jesus Christ and adhere to its Statement of Faith and values. Young Life's camps provide an environment where the teachings of the Bible are presented clearly and memorably through activities, fellowship, and dedicated ministry efforts.
One of Young Life's key operational sites is Lost Canyon Camp, located in Williams, Arizona, at an elevation of 7,000 feet. This scenic location plays an integral role in the ministry by hosting year-round guests and seasonal camping programs that run primarily from May to October. Lost Canyon attracts a diverse range of visitors including volunteer high school and college students committed to serving in a ministry capacity. The camp focuses heavily on creating a welcoming and Christ-centered environment that supports both spiritual and practical growth for all participants.
The Food Service Manager role at Lost Canyon is pivotal for maintaining the quality and integrity of the camp’s food operations. The individual responsible for this position will oversee all kitchen and dining hall systems, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards, and supporting the camp’s mission through diligent and faithful service. This full-time position offers a salary range from $2,670 to $2,850 per month, with additional benefits such as a 17 percent cost-of-living adjustment and a housing stipend available when applicable for staff living off camp.
The primary responsibility of the Food Service Manager is the operation and maintenance of all food service-related equipment and facilities. This includes training staff and volunteers on cleanliness protocols that meet both Department of Health regulations and internal Young Life Food Service Standards. The manager will also be responsible for menu development emphasizing healthy dietary criteria, inventory control of food, paper, chemicals, and equipment, and minimizing waste through recycling initiation. Collaboration with the Executive Chef and continuous review of industry best practices are key to staying current on food service innovations and improvements.
Additionally, the role involves administrative duties such as tracking food costs and facilitating quality assurance audits both within Lost Canyon and at other Young Life properties. The Food Service Manager will also play a significant role in mentoring seasonal staff and volunteers, fostering a team-oriented environment, and ensuring that all food service personnel can perform their duties in harmony with Young Life's Christian mission and values.
The working environment may involve physically demanding tasks including lifting materials up to 60 pounds, exposure to cleaning chemicals, and working in the camp’s mountain setting. However, the role provides ample opportunity to build meaningful relationships, demonstrate Christ-like hospitality to camp guests and staff, and participate in a supportive community deeply rooted in faith. Staff members are expected to maintain a professional demeanor and be prepared to address the needs of guests promptly and courteously, reflecting the ministry's commitment to relational ministry practices and hospitality.
This role is ideal for individuals with at least three years of experience in food service management, a background in culinary training or food service apprenticeship, and a personal commitment to Christian living and ministry. It offers a unique opportunity to combine professional culinary skills with ministry work in a vibrant, faith-driven camp environment. Being part of Young Life’s Lost Canyon team means supporting a transformational experience for young people while growing personally and professionally in a community that values faith, service, and excellence.
