We are currently seeking talented and dedicated full-time Chefs to join our campus team. This role is integral to the university's food services, contributing to the culinary excellence and the overall dining experience on campus. The position requires culinary professionals with previous catering experience, familiar with technical cooking terms and catering operations. As part of our team, Chefs will work schedules based on business needs, including nights and weekends, making flexibility and reliability essential. The pay range for this position is $22.00 to $26.00 per hour, reflecting the importance of the role and the skills required.
The Chef role involves directing, coordinating, and evaluating kitchen operations and food production activities. This leadership position entails supervising kitchen staff, ensuring all food handling and sanitation standards are met, and maintaining high-quality standards in food preparation and presentation. Chefs oversee the preparation of meals, either serving on-site or prepping for delivery, while ensuring compliance with portion control and temperature guidelines. They are also responsible for inventory management, including tracking food use and waste, as well as purchasing supplies to support smooth food-service operations.
This dynamic role requires multitasking and a commitment to excellence. Chefs at UMBC contribute to menu development and recipe creation, enhancing the culinary offerings for the campus community. They also handle administrative responsibilities such as interviewing and training staff, managing schedules and payroll, providing performance feedback, and enforcing disciplinary actions when necessary. Job Duties
- Supervises, coordinates and participates in activities of cooks and other associates engaged in preparing, cooking and serving food
- Ensures all food handling, sanitation and customer service standards are met
- Supervises hourly kitchen associates, including interviewing, scheduling, payroll, training, counseling, participating in reviews and recommending disciplinary action
- Efficiently prepares high-quality food items according to standardized recipes to meet production, delivery and service schedules
- Ensures proper presentation, food quality, portion control and maintenance of proper serving temperatures
- Tracks food use, waste and consumption to requisition or purchase product
- Receives and inspects product and supplies for quality and quantity to ensure appropriate inventory
- Maintains sanitation of equipment, supplies and utensils
- Cleans workstation thoroughly before leaving area
- Keeps display equipment clean and free of debris during meal service to ensure compliance with sanitation, safety, production and merchandising requirements
- Helps select and develop recipes and menus
- Performs other duties as assigned
