Job Description

Northwestern Mutual is a leading financial services company that values integrity, innovation, and client-centric solutions. Established over a century ago, the company has expanded its services to include not only wealth management but also a variety of support services that ensure the well-being and satisfaction of its employees and clients. As a best-in-class employer, Northwestern Mutual is dedicated to fostering an inclusive workplace where employees feel empowered to contribute their unique ideas, embrace challenges, and develop their careers within a supportive environment.

The Chef role at Northwestern Mutual is a dynamic and vital position within the company's restaurant division, working under the supervision of the Chef Team Leader and Restaurant Manager. This role is responsible for preparing high-quality food from scratch for both cafeteria and catering services. The Chef will prepare a wide array of menu items including soups, roasts, casseroles, sauces, vegetables, salads, sandwiches, and bakery products, utilizing various cooking techniques such as roasting, sautéing, grilling, steaming, proofing, and baking. There is a strong emphasis on scratch cooking and baking methods that enhance both the flavor and healthfulness of the food.

Beyond food preparation, the Chef plays an important role in improving the overall wellness profile of the menu items by researching and testing recipes that align with healthy eating standards. Attention to safety is paramount; the Chef must consistently practice safe food handling, proper ergonomic techniques, and maintain a clean, organized workspace to meet rigorous sanitation standards. Equipment operation and cleaning must also follow established safety guidelines.

Collaboration is key in this role, as the Chef supports menu planning and management, ensuring accurate inventory records, proper portioning, and maintaining consistent quality throughout the service. Communication skills are essential for interaction with customers and servers, offering clear explanations about menu selections, preparation methods, and addressing any concerns to deliver an excellent dining experience.

The role also requires stepping up to cover additional responsibilities during the absence of the Chef Team Leader, demonstrating leadership and customer-focused decision-making. The position offers a competitive pay range between $17.93 and $26.89 per hour, with geographic-specific pay structures for locations such as California and New York City. Required testing must be successfully completed by candidates before final selection. Northwestern Mutual values transparency, fairness, and a commitment to continuous growth, both in culinary skills and professional development. This is an exceptional career opportunity for chefs passionate about healthy cooking, culinary excellence, and delivering outstanding hospitality in a corporate dining setting.
