Job Description

Denver Rescue Mission is a faith-based Christian organization dedicated to serving individuals experiencing homelessness and poverty in the Denver community. It operates multiple facilities where it provides essential services such as food, shelter, and support to help people rebuild their lives. With a deep commitment to Christian values, the Mission seeks to create a welcoming and caring environment for all guests, volunteers, and staff. The organization strongly emphasizes respect, teamwork, and a culture of continuous improvement while fostering a spirit of humility, hunger for improvement, and intelligence among its team members. As a community-focused nonprofit, Denver Rescue Mission relies on donated food and volunteer services to execute its programs effectively and efficiently while maintaining high standards of food safety and service.

The Chef position at Denver Rescue Mission is available as either a full-time or part-time role, with hours adaptable to less than 30 hours per week based on organizational needs. The hourly pay ranges from $20.75 to $22.31, determined by qualifications and experience. This role reports to the Denver Food Services leadership team and plays a critical part in managing kitchen operations and volunteer engagement across the organization’s facilities, specifically the 48th Avenue Shelter which currently offers temporary positions expected to conclude by December 31, 2026. The Chef is responsible for all aspects of kitchen activities, including planning and executing menus using donated food supplies, supervising meal preparation, and ensuring that buffet-style meal service runs smoothly for clients who rely on Denver Rescue Mission’s support.

In this position, the Chef oversees volunteer coordination by working closely with the Volunteer Services department to mobilize and engage volunteers, ensuring they are productive and have positive experiences. The Chef fosters a professional and respectful team environment where both staff and volunteers collaborate effectively. Additionally, the role encompasses inventory management, ensuring proper rotation and storage of food items, compliance with health department standards, and accurate recording of donations. Food safety is rigorously maintained through strict adherence to hygiene, sanitation codes, cleaning schedules, and Denver Rescue Mission’s established protocols.

The Chef position also requires periodic participation in staff meetings, involvement in continuous improvement projects, and the promotion of the organization’s values. Candidates must demonstrate strong Christian ethics and the ability to work harmoniously with a diverse range of individuals from various cultural and religious backgrounds. Key certifications like ServSafe and CPR are mandatory or must be obtained within 90 days of hire. The position demands physical capability to lift up to 50 pounds and a willingness to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed. Denver Rescue Mission prides itself on being an equal opportunity employer while hiring only individuals who share its Christian beliefs and mission as outlined in its Statement of Faith.

The comprehensive benefits offered include medical, dental, and vision insurance, generous paid time off including vacation, holidays, sick leave, a paid birthday, and refreshment day as well as tuition reimbursement and child adoption benefits. Employees may also receive employer-paid term life insurance, long-term disability, accidental death and dismemberment coverage, health savings accounts with employer contributions, and access to flexible spending accounts. Paid parental and bereavement leave, along with a 401(k) plan featuring up to a 5% company match, further enhance the support provided to staff. Denver Rescue Mission strives to create a supportive and nurturing workplace where employees feel valued and empowered to deliver lifesaving services to the community.
