York Gardens Senior Living is a distinguished senior living community located in the heart of Edina, MN. This vibrant community is strategically positioned near public transportation and offers convenient access to major highways such as Highways 100, I-35W, and I-494, making it easily accessible to residents and their families. York Gardens features 76 apartments that cater to various living needs, including Assisted Living, Independent Living, and Memory Care, all within a warm, friendly, and supportive environment. The role of Chef/Cook at York Gardens Senior Living is a critical position responsible for preparing and presenting meals that meet both regulatory standards and the culinary expectations of senior residents. This part-time position requires working 24 hours over two weeks during day shifts, specifically on Thursday and Friday from 5 am to 1:30 pm in the first week, and Friday from 5 am to 1:30 pm in the second week. The role not only demands culinary skills but also a commitment to maintaining a reliable schedule and working in a supportive environment alongside a collaborative culinary team.

The Chef/Cook will be responsible for ensuring consistent quality and nutritional value in meal preparation. A specialized knowledge of preparing texturized diets in accordance with the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) is essential, catering to residents with specific swallowing and dietary needs. Maintaining cleanliness and sanitation in the kitchen is a top priority, following proper cleaning schedules, correctly using equipment and chemicals, and ensuring that work areas meet hygiene standards.

This role also involves supervisory responsibilities, such as overseeing kitchen staff and managing daily kitchen operations during the supervisor's absence. Effective communication skills are necessary to relay resident and guest feedback about meal and service quality, contributing to continuous improvement within the food service department.

Job Requirements

  • Must be 18+ years old
  • Food handlers certification issued by an ANAB-CFP accredited food sanitation program within 90 days
  • Ability to follow standardized recipes and preparation procedures
  • Capacity to work a part-time schedule including early morning shifts
  • Commitment to maintaining cleanliness and sanitation standards
  • Ability to supervise kitchen staff and manage operations in the absence of a supervisor
  • Effective communication skills to interact with residents and team members

Job Qualifications

  • 0 - 1 year experience
  • Must be 18+ years old
  • Food handlers certification issued by an ANAB-CFP accredited food sanitation program within 90 days
  • Vocational school technical training or associate degree in food service
  • 1 - 3 years experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of basic Microsoft applications preferred
  • Food protection manager certification issued by an ANAB-CFP accredited food sanitation program within 90 days preferred
  • Certified Food Protection Manager certificate (CFPM) issued by the State of Minnesota within 90 days preferred

Job Duties

  • Prepare and cook food items to specified temperatures, following standardized recipes to ensure consistent quality, nutritional value, and proper portioning
  • Weigh and measure ingredients per standardized recipes
  • Assemble meals and bakery items within designated time frames, complete daily preparation tasks accurately, and assist with special events
  • Proper knowledge and preparation of texturized diets utilizing International Dysphagia Diet Standardization (IDDSI) standards
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary work environment by following proper cleaning schedules, using recommended equipment and chemicals, separating clean and dirty areas, and thoroughly scrubbing pots and pans as required
  • Demonstrate the ability to supervise kitchen staff, manage daily operations and customer service in the supervisor’s absence, and effectively communicate resident and guest feedback on meal and service quality
