The role of Chef/Cook at Bethesda Senior Living Communities is a critical position responsible for delivering nutritious, delicious, and professionally presented meals tailored to meet the dietary needs and preferences of senior residents. This full-time role involves day and evening shifts with a flexible schedule and requires availability every other weekend. The Chef/Cook will oversee all aspects of meal preparation, ensuring compliance with established recipes and menus, and working closely with the Culinary Services Director to plan menus that accommodate various dietary restrictions, including diabetic, low fat, salt-free, and liquid diets. The position demands high standards of food safety, sanitation, and presentation.

The ideal candidate for this role is not only skilled in cooking and baking but also possesses a genuine compassion and servant’s heart for the elderly community. They will be responsible for setting up kitchens, prepping ingredients, cleaning to required health standards, maintaining organized storerooms and kitchen equipment, and ensuring food is served at appropriate temperatures. Their duties also extend to assisting with special meals and managing dining room preparation and service activities. Given the fast-paced and physically demanding nature of the role, candidates must be capable of prioritizing tasks, lifting heavy items, and working independently while being a positive and professional representative of Bethesda Senior Living Communities.

Job Requirements

  • Must be high school graduate or equivalent
  • culinary training preferred
  • health certification as required by local, state, and federal health departments
  • ability to read, comprehend, and follow recipes and procedures
  • must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 20 pounds frequently and 50 pounds occasionally
  • ability to perform stirring, sifting, cutting, slicing, reaching, bending
  • must be able to stand for long periods and walk between kitchen and dining areas carrying trays and plates
  • must be able to work flexible day and evening shifts including every other weekend

Job Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • culinary training preferred
  • has appropriate health certification as required by local, state, and federal health departments
  • excellent cooking and baking skills
  • knowledge of menu planning for geriatric residents
  • knowledge of restricted diets such as diabetic, low fat, salt free, liquid, etc.
  • interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with residents and staff
  • ability to work independently and prioritize workload
  • demonstrates a servant heart and attitude
  • knowledge of MSDS sheets and guidelines

Job Duties

  • Cooks meals according to established recipes and menus
  • assists Culinary Services Director in creating menus that meet residents' nutritional needs and accommodates food preferences
  • presents meals that are pleasing to the eye and palate
  • sets up kitchen and preps according to each day's menu and preps for the next day
  • cleans dishes, floors, walls, and kitchen equipment maintaining sanitary guidelines
  • maintains an organized, clean, and safe storeroom, coolers, and kitchen
  • assists in planning and cooking of special meals
  • maintains proper temperatures of steam table, dishwasher, refrigerator and freezer
  • maintains confidentiality of residents' personal information and protects residents' rights
  • maintains a professional appearance and demeanor that encourages a positive nurturing environment
  • maintains a positive customer service environment and practices honesty and integrity
  • ensures adequate daily coverage for meal service and assists with dining room preparation and cleaning between meals
  • performs all other duties as assigned or required
