Job Description
The Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island, often referred to simply as the Alliance, is a vital community organization deeply committed to enhancing the quality of life for Jewish individuals and families in Rhode Island, Israel, and around the world. Established with a mission to unite the Jewish community through philanthropy, educational initiatives, wellness programs, community relations, and collaborative efforts among agencies, synagogues, and organizations, the Alliance serves as a central hub for cultural and social engagement. Grounded in core Jewish values such as Tzedakah (righteous giving and justice), L'dor v'dor (securing a future rooted in Jewish tradition and heritage), Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), Hineni (standing with others), Klal Yisrael (supporting global Judaism and Israel), and Torah (lifelong learning), the Alliance tirelessly works to translate tradition into meaningful, contemporary action.
Within this dynamic organization, the role of the Chef is pivotal. Serving as the heart of the kitchen, this full-time, non-exempt position in the Youth and Family Programs department is responsible for preparing and serving attractive, nutritionally balanced meals specifically catered to children attending the Alliance’s early childhood center and summer camp throughout the year. The Chef diligently maintains exceptional standards of quality food production and portion control while ensuring strict compliance with all state and federal regulations, including those mandated by the Rhode Island Department of Health and the Department of Human Services child care licensing. This role demands an individual who can uphold food safety and sanitation rigorously, sustain a nut-free environment and accommodate a variety of dietary restrictions with sensitivity and care.
The Chef’s responsibilities are broad and highly impactful, including developing home-style, nutrition-focused monthly menus that respect kashrut laws and school food policies, overseeing catering for staff and community events, and meticulously managing allergy and dietary accommodation documentation. Ordering, inventory management, and cost tracking fall under the Chef’s purview, requiring strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Daily meal preparation and distribution adhere strictly to HACCP principles to guarantee safety and quality. Additionally, the Chef ensures all kitchen equipment and eating surfaces are sanitized and that refrigeration units maintain appropriate temperatures per regulatory standards. Supporting and supervising kitchen staff as needed, participating in staff meetings and workshops, and maintaining certifications such as ServSafe Manager, CPR, and First Aid are essential elements of this demanding and rewarding role.
This role invites candidates with demonstrated experience in large quantity food preparation, particularly in childcare environments, and a commitment to the Alliance’s core values such as inclusivity, community support, and educational enrichment. The ideal candidate possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office and web browsers, knowledge of general nutrition and recipe development, and the ability to work independently with responsibility and compassion. Physically, the Chef must be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds and standing for extended periods, with regular tasks involving walking, reaching, and carrying kitchen equipment.
By joining the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island as Chef, you become part of a community that values tradition, innovation, and collaboration. You will contribute significantly to the well-being and development of children by providing nutritious meals in a safe, inclusive environment while being supported by an organization committed to diversity, equal opportunity, and the enrichment of Jewish life culturally and spiritually.
