Vernon Terrace of Edina is a distinguished senior living community situated conveniently near public transportation stops and close to the vibrant areas of St. Louis Park, Hopkins, and Southwest Minneapolis. The role of the Chef at Vernon Terrace is integral to maintaining the high standards and expectations for meal preparation and presentation consistent with applicable regulations and customer satisfaction. This full-time position involves working 80 hours every two weeks with a schedule that includes rotation every other weekend and holidays. The Chef’s responsibilities are comprehensive and extend beyond simple meal preparation to include supervising kitchen staff, managing daily kitchen operations, and contributing to the overall resident dining experience. They must expertly prepare and cook food items to specified temperatures while following standardized recipes to ensure consistent quality, nutritional value, and proper portioning. This also includes the assembly of meals and bakery items within designated timeframes and assisting with special events that enhance community engagement.

An important aspect of the role requires the Chef to have knowledge of texturized diets, specifically utilizing the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization (IDDSI) standards, catering to residents with particular dietary needs. A clean and sanitary work environment is paramount, requiring adherence to proper cleaning schedules and the use of recommended equipment and chemicals. The Chef is also expected to demonstrate strong leadership skills by supervising kitchen staff, managing operations in the supervisor’s absence, and effectively communicating resident and guest feedback on meal and service quality.

Job Requirements

  • Must be 18+ years old
  • Food Handlers certification issued by an ANAB-CFP accredited food sanitation program within 90 days
  • 0 - 1 year experience
  • Ability to work every other weekend and holiday rotation
  • Ability to prepare food according to specified standards and dietary guidelines
  • Ability to maintain a clean and sanitary work environment
  • Ability to supervise kitchen staff and manage operations during the supervisor's absence

Job Qualifications

  • 0 - 1 year experience
  • Must be 18+ years old
  • Food Handlers certification issued by an ANAB-CFP accredited food sanitation program within 90 days
  • Vocational school technical training or associate degree in food service preferred
  • 1 - 3 years experience preferred
  • Working knowledge of basic Microsoft applications preferred
  • Food Protection Manager certification or Certified Food Protection Manager certificate (CFPM) issued by the State of Minnesota within 90 days preferred

Job Duties

  • Prepare and cook food items to specified temperatures following standardized recipes to ensure consistent quality nutritional value and proper portioning
  • Weigh and measure ingredients per standardized recipes
  • Assemble meals and bakery items within designated time frames complete daily preparation tasks accurately and assist with special events
  • Proper knowledge and preparation of texturized diets utilizing International Dysphagia Diet Standardization (IDDSI) standards
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary work environment by following proper cleaning schedules using recommended equipment and chemicals separating clean and dirty areas and thoroughly scrubbing pots and pans as required
  • Demonstrate the ability to supervise kitchen staff manage daily operations and customer service in the supervisor’s absence and effectively communicate resident and guest feedback on meal and service quality
