Job Description

Yale University, located in New Haven, Connecticut, is one of the world's leading academic institutions, known for its commitment to excellence in education, research, and community engagement. With a rich history and a dynamic approach to innovation and inclusivity, Yale provides an inspiring environment for its students, faculty, and staff. The university embraces diversity and fosters an atmosphere where talents and contributions from all backgrounds are welcomed and valued.

The role of Chapel Manager at Yale is a unique opportunity to support and enrich the worship program at Marquand Chapel, a key spiritual and communal space within the Yale Divinity School community. This full-time, hybrid position is grant-funded for a fixed duration from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2028, offering a competitive salary range from $68,000 to $120,500. As Chapel Manager, the successful candidate will work under the direction of the Associate Dean of Chapel and in partnership with the Director of Chapel Music to oversee all aspects of daily worship services, chapel communications, and facilities management.

The Chapel Manager is responsible for three major areas: service planning and logistics, student worker management, and chapel communications and facilities. This involves hiring and supervising a team of approximately 15 student workers who assist with the planning and leadership of worship services, ensuring their training and quality of leadership throughout the year. The role demands a deep understanding of liturgical traditions and the ability to engage a diverse community in meaningful worship experiences.

In addition to managing worship services, the Chapel Manager will coordinate chapel communications, including daily worship materials, educational content, announcements, and the Chapel's online presence such as social media and web-based journals. Collaboration with various communications departments across Yale University, the Yale Divinity School, and the Institute of Sacred Music ensures a cohesive and connected outreach strategy.

Facilities management is another critical component of the role, involving oversight of the chapel calendar, maintenance of liturgical resources and equipment, and coordination of logistical needs such as furniture arrangement and hosting visiting speakers. The position requires excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, as well as flexibility and cooperation in working with students, faculty, and staff from varied Christian denominational traditions.

The Chapel Manager also plays a vital role in liturgical scholarship and innovation, developing new worship resources and expressions while maintaining and enhancing traditional practices. The position entails attending daily worship services, participating in planning meetings, and occasionally leading worship. Responsibilities extend to summer worship conferences and ministerial duties in Battell Chapel during the summer months.

Yale University is committed to equal opportunity employment and welcomes applicants from a broad range of backgrounds and perspectives. The institution values diversity and seeks to provide a welcoming, inclusive environment for all employees. Applicants will be subject to pre-employment background screening as part of the hiring process. This position reports under the professional job category with classification as a manager and program leader (P5), and it operates within a staff fixed-term duration framework. Yale is a tobacco-free campus, emphasizing a healthy and supportive workplace for all.
