Job Description

Baptist Medical Center Hospital is a renowned healthcare institution committed to delivering exceptional patient care within a supportive and collaborative environment. It is part of the Baptist Health System, which has a rich history of over 120 years dedicated to serving the community and making a positive impact on people’s health and well-being. The Baptist Health System encompasses six full-service hospitals, a specialized children’s hospital with a dedicated pediatric emergency unit, a comprehensive cancer care network, fitness and rehabilitation centers, a physician network, imaging centers, ambulatory services, and the Baptist School of Health Professions. This vast network ensures that patients receive comprehensive and compassionate care across a wide range of medical specialties and services.

At Baptist Medical Center, the focus extends beyond just providing medical treatment to fostering a work environment that supports health professionals in their professional growth and personal well-being. The hospital is equipped with advanced technology and adheres to best practices and standards to ensure the highest quality of care for surgical and obstetrical patients. The institution values its workforce as its greatest asset and offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to promote health, career advancement, and work-life balance.

The role of Surgical First Assistant at Baptist Medical Center Hospital involves assisting the operating surgeon in various surgical procedures to ensure patient safety and the effective conduct of invasive operations. This position requires providing both direct and indirect technical care to surgical and obstetrical patients, facilitating smooth surgical processes by adhering to established practices, protocols, and sterile techniques. A Surgical First Assistant plays a critical role in the surgical team by anticipating the needs of the surgeon, managing surgical instruments, and helping manage patient care throughout the operation. This position may qualify for a sign-on bonus, reflecting the hospital’s commitment to attracting and retaining top-tier surgical professionals.

Candidates for this position must have graduated from a Surgical First Assistant program and be eligible to earn certification through recognized boards such as the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), American Board of Surgical Assistants (ABSA), or the National Surgical Assistant Association (NSAA) within 120 days from graduation. Additionally, candidates should have a minimum of one year of recent operating room experience, demonstrating proficiency in sterile techniques and direct patient contact, with a preference for those with two or more years of experience. Certification requirements include being a Certified Surgical Technologist and holding or obtaining certification as a certified first assistant through the NBSTSA, ABSA, or NSAA. This certification must be maintained through ongoing continuing education or recertification testing.

Furthermore, candidates must have active healthcare provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire, with adherence to American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider BLS certification within 60 days of hire. This ensures the candidate is prepared to respond promptly and effectively to any patient emergencies during surgical procedures.

Baptist Medical Center also provides a supportive work culture focused on career development and continuing education to help employees advance their skills and knowledge. The hospital’s dedication to employee well-being is evidenced through its extensive benefits package, which includes medical, dental, vision, and life insurance; a 401(k) retirement savings plan with employer matching; generous paid time off to promote a healthy work-life balance; and additional voluntary benefits such as pet insurance, legal insurance, and accident and critical illness insurance.

Joining the Baptist Medical Center Hospital team means contributing to a healthcare community dedicated to compassionate service inspired by faith and working alongside experienced professionals committed to patient-centered care. This position offers an inspiring opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of patients through expert surgical assistance and collaboration within a healthcare team that values respect, excellence, and ongoing professional growth.
