We are currently seeking a Certified Ophthalmic Technician to join our specialized eye care team. This position plays a crucial role in assisting ophthalmologists and other healthcare providers by conducting essential diagnostic tests that aid in the evaluation and treatment of various eye conditions. The Certified Ophthalmic Technician will perform a range of duties including preliminary visual field screenings, ocular motility assessments, color vision tests, and pupil evaluations among others. This role requires precision and a thorough understanding of ophthalmic examination techniques and instrumentation. The technician will also be responsible for measuring visual acuity and assisting in the fitting and care of contact lenses. Beyond technical skills, the position demands excellent patient interaction capabilities to guide patients through diagnostic procedures and alleviate their concerns. Additionally, the Certified Ophthalmic Technician will manage patient data, coordinate referrals for tests and procedures, and assist in minor surgical tasks and research initiatives related to ophthalmology. The role requires a commitment to maintaining equipment, sterilizing instruments, and ensuring that all clinical areas are adequately stocked and clean. Job Requirements

  • completion of ophthalmic technician training
  • certification as a certified ophthalmic technician by the joint commission on allied health personnel in ophthalmology
  • ability to perform ophthalmic diagnostic tests and patient assessments
  • skill in operating and maintaining clinical ophthalmic instruments
  • capability to assist in minor surgical and research procedures
  • good interpersonal and patient communication skills
  • adherence to sterilization and safety protocols

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • perform preliminary screening examinations for physician review including central and peripheral visual field tests
  • ocular motility tests
  • color vision tests
  • pharmacological pupil tests
  • tonometry
  • tonography and tensilon tonography tests to determine intraocular pressure and pupil testing for size, equality and reaction prior to dilation
  • examine the cornea, lens and anterior chamber of the eye using a slit lamp and note variations from normal
  • measure acuity of patient with and without glasses for distance and near vision
  • obtain optical and lensometry measurements to determine lens prescription and correct acuity problems
  • record findings on patient chart
  • obtain topographical measurements of the eye including corneal diameter and curvature
  • assist the physician to fit patients with contact lenses and evaluate lens fit with a bio-microscope
  • instruct patients on proper techniques for caring for, inserting and wearing contact lenses
  • direct the flow of patients examined by an Eye Center physician
  • obtain medical and personal data for patient charts
  • screen patients for conditions excluding ocular examination
  • arrange for laboratory and other tests, ophthalmic photography, outpatient studies and patient admissions and surgery as requested by physician
  • alleviate patient and family concerns by explaining diagnostic procedures and treatment methods
  • screen walk-in patients, emergency patients and telephone calls to determine appropriate physician and appointment priority
  • administer electro-retinogram, electro-oculogram tests and specular microscopy examinations
  • calibrate and maintain instruments including bio-microscopes, lensometer, keratometer, tangent screen, slit lamp and tonometers
  • clean and stock consultation rooms and microbiology laboratory
  • sterilize and set up instruments for ophthalmic surgical procedures
  • assist with minor office surgery, laser treatments and operating room surgery
  • assist physician in preparation of microbiological specimens and research studies
  • perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein
