As part of Duke Primary Care, the Certified Medical Assistant role within the MyChart department is vital in supporting the seamless delivery of care through digital and clinical channels. This position combines clinical duties such as patient history collection, vital sign monitoring, and assisting with procedures, alongside administrative responsibilities including scheduling, billing, and patient communication. The MyChart department plays a key role in managing the My Duke Health portal, enabling patients secure access to medical records, appointment scheduling, virtual consultations, billing, and more. This integration of clinical support and digital coordination improves patient engagement and streamlines workflows across the continuum of care.
Located in Research Triangle Park, NC, this Certified Medical Assistant position offers a unique hybrid work opportunity after a probationary period, supporting a modern and flexible work environment. Job Requirements
- Certified Medical Assistant certification required prior to starting
- high school diploma or GED required
- graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred
- basic life support certification required
- ability to perform clinical duties including EKGs, phlebotomy, dressing changes
- ability to manage administrative tasks such as scheduling, billing, and charting
- strong communication and organizational skills
- capability to lift heavy items and assist with patient transport
- ability to follow safety and infection control protocols
- credentialing as per AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA
- clinical experience depending on level (none for Level I, one year for Level II, three years for Level III)
- ability to work standard business hours 8am-5pm
- willingness to work remotely after probation period subject to performance
Job Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program strongly preferred
- high school or GED graduation required
- certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA, or ARMA required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
- strong customer service skills
- ability to follow oral and written instructions
- knowledge of sterile techniques and procedures
- understanding of sanitation and infection control practices
- familiarity with routine and special patient treatments
- ability to document and communicate information clearly
- typing skills and knowledge of medical terminology for Levels II and III
- ability to work independently and collaboratively
- minimum 1 year of clinical experience for Level II
- minimum 3 years of clinical experience for Level III
- completion of the Medical Assistant Ladder Program requirements for Levels II and III
Job Duties
- Collect medical histories
- monitor vital signs
- explain treatments to patients
- prepare patients for exams and procedures
- assist medical staff
- gather and prepare lab samples
- conduct basic lab tests
- perform EKGs
- remove sutures and staples
- change dressings
- educate patients and families about care
- document in medical records
- dispose of contaminated supplies
- process instruments
- clean medical equipment
- call in prescriptions
- prepare and give medications as instructed
- handle prescription refills
- perform other clinical tasks as assigned by the doctor
- greet patients
- answer calls
- schedule appointments including arrival in Maestro Care
- check out patients
- handle referral scheduling
- coordinate hospital admissions and lab services
- update medical records
- complete forms
- manage billing tasks including receiving copays and collecting balances
- handle correspondence
- order supplies
- assist with clinic activities such as Joint Commission or fall prevention efforts
- participate in clinic committees
