The position of Medical Assistant, Certified at Duke Regional Hospital is an integral role within the interdisciplinary healthcare team focused on delivering exceptional direct patient care. The Medical Assistant, Certified performs a balanced mix of administrative and clinical support duties that are critical for the smooth operation of the clinic or office. This role is vital in assisting medical and nursing staff during patient examinations and treatment procedures, facilitating patient flow, and enhancing the overall patient experience.

In this role, Medical Assistants take vital signs, collect medical histories, explain treatment protocols to patients, and prepare them for examinations. Clinical duties include assisting medical personnel during exams and procedures, collecting lab specimens, performing basic laboratory tests, conducting electrocardiograms, and administering medications as prescribed. They also perform wound care, such as removing sutures and changing dressings, while ensuring sanitary and sterile conditions. Moreover, Medical Assistants educate patients and their families on care plans, document critical information in patient records, and manage routine clinical tasks like sterilizing instruments and preparing prescriptions.

On the administrative side, Medical Assistants greet patients, manage phone communications, schedule appointments using Duke’s MaestroCare system, coordinate referrals, process billing and payments, and maintain medical records. They also serve as liaisons for clinic activities such as Joint Commission compliance and safety committees. The role requires strong customer service skills, the ability to follow verbal and written instructions, and physical stamina for tasks including patient transport.

Job Requirements

  • high school diploma or GED required
  • graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program strongly preferred
  • certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA or ARMA required
  • BLS certification required
  • no experience required for entry level
  • clinical experience of 1 to 3 years required for higher levels
  • ability to lift and transport patients when necessary
  • good customer service skills
  • ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • knowledge of sterile techniques and infection control procedures
  • ability to perform routine administrative and clinical duties
  • ability to use electronic scheduling and medical record systems

Job Qualifications

  • certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA or ARMA required
  • basic life support (BLS) certification required
  • graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program strongly preferred
  • experience in a clinical setting is preferred depending on level
  • excellent customer service skills
  • ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • knowledge of medical terminology and clinic procedures
  • ability to document and communicate pertinent information
  • ability to establish effective working relationships with patients and staff
  • proficiency in typing and use of electronic health record systems

Job Duties
