Central Distribution Driver

The Central Distribution Driver position is a key role within a busy Distribution Center that supports a large school district by ensuring the timely and safe delivery of supplies, food, and other distribution materials to various school campuses and designated locations. This role is critical to maintaining the seamless operation of the district's supply chain, impacting schools' ability to serve their students effectively. The hiring organization operates a distribution center dedicated to supporting educational institutions by handling logistical operations such as storage, packing, staging, and transportation of goods. This position is classified under Trades/Skilled Trades and is a non-exempt role under the MT4/260A salary structure. The individual hired for this job will report directly to the Coordinator of the Distribution Center. Working in a non-exempt capacity means this position is eligible for overtime pay when hours exceed the standard workweek. The labor environment is dynamic, requiring both physical stamina and attention to safety given the transportation and handling of various materials. The Central Distribution Driver plays a vital role in supporting the district recycling program by providing necessary recycling services, further emphasizing the organization’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

The responsibilities of this role include operating district vehicles to deliver food, general supplies, and other goods to schools and district locations. Although this position requires professional driving skills, it specifically does not involve the operation of a school bus, focusing instead on transportation duties that support district logistics. Drivers must conduct vehicle inspections before and after operations to identify any mechanical or safety defects, ensuring the fleet remains in good condition. This also involves preparing work orders for any needed repairs and checking fuel levels and vehicle gauges to maintain operational readiness. Strict adherence to traffic laws and safety regulations is paramount to ensure the driver’s safety and the safety of others on the road.

Additional tasks involve safely securing cargo for transport, operating equipment like electric and manual pallet jacks, and following assigned routes and schedules meticulously. Documentation is another critical aspect, with drivers required to maintain property accountability by completing forms and obtaining delivery signatures. Effective communication is essential, as the driver must keep the distribution center operations manager informed of any issues, delays, or incidents. Besides driving and delivery, the role includes workload assistance such as coordinating, packing, staging pallets at the distribution center, and helping with loading and unloading of trucks. This comprehensive involvement ensures the efficient flow of goods and contributes to the district’s overall operational success.

Moreover, the Central Distribution Driver must be able to meet specific physical demands, including lifting up to 40 pounds, frequent walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, and handling equipment. The work environment can expose the driver to various weather conditions and occasional loud noise, requiring resilience and adaptability. To qualify, candidates must hold a valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B) with passenger and air brake endorsements, demonstrate a strong safety record, and pass pre-employment drug tests and physical evaluations. The ideal candidate is 18 years or older, capable of problem-solving in fast-paced situations, and proficient in communicating clearly both in writing and verbally.
