The USO is currently seeking a Center Operations Specialist to join its team in Portland, Oregon. This role involves managing the day-to-day operations of USO Centers, ensuring a safe, welcoming, and clean environment where service members can enjoy various programs, activities, and services. The specialist will be responsible for executing operational procedures, maintaining facilities and equipment, and enforcing sanitary and food-handling guidelines. They will engage with center visitors, provide expert knowledge about center offerings, and serve as a resource for troubleshooting and vendor management. Additionally, the role includes responsibilities in budgeting, inventory management, and accurate financial reporting.
The Center Operations Specialist will play a key role in planning and executing programs and events both on and off military installations to provide engaging and memorable experiences. This includes collaborating with military leadership, local community partners, donors, and media representatives to enhance awareness and support for the USO mission. Volunteer coordination and management are also vital aspects of the position, involving the recruitment, training, communication, and recognition of volunteers to ensure smooth program delivery.
The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent with at least two years of relevant work experience in areas such as event management, marketing, retail, customer service, or recreation facilities. Experience in nonprofit, military, multicultural, or global organizations is preferred. Candidates must possess strong interpersonal, customer service, and problem-solving skills and be proficient with computers, including Microsoft Office and volunteer management software. A demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with discretion, manage multiple projects efficiently, and adapt to changing organizational needs is essential.

Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- At least 2 years of relevant work experience
- Experience in event management marketing retail customer service recreation or similar fields
- Strong interpersonal customer service and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency with computer software including Microsoft Office
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
- Ability to manage multiple projects and adapt to organizational changes
- Willingness to work non-standard hours including weekends or holidays
- Ability to obtain proper security and access credentials
- Valid driver’s license required
- Ability to obtain and maintain valid US passport and foreign driver’s license where applicable
- Strong commitment to the mission of the USO
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 2 years work experience in event management marketing retail customer service recreation facility or related role
- Preferred experience in nonprofit military multicultural or global organization
- Strong interpersonal customer service and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency with computers and electronics including Microsoft Office Suite
- Working knowledge of volunteer management software and social media platforms
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment in sensitive matters
- Ability to handle confidential information tactfully
- Self-motivated with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- Basic math skills and knowledge of cash handling and business accounting functions
- Willingness to work non-standard hours
- General knowledge of military community preferred
- Ability to obtain and maintain required security credentials and valid driver’s license
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid US passport and foreign driver’s license where applicable
- Strong advocacy for the USO mission
Job Duties
- Execute day-to-day Center operational procedures ensuring a cost-effective safe welcoming and clean environment
- Monitor and maintain facilities and equipment enforcing sanitary and food-handling guidelines
- Engage and interact with Center visitors serving as a subject matter expert about amenities tours classes programs and services
- Help maintain Center operations within budget monitoring maintaining and reporting on inventory and handling cash
- Create and maintain a Standard Operating Procedure file detailing local operational procedures and Center activities
- Assist in planning overseeing and leading execution of operational areas including programs logistics inventory management budget social media and database management
- Assist with operations and programs communications compiling and preparing announcements stories and photos for social media local media and website publications
- Deliver or assist in managing planning and evaluation of new and existing USO programs activities and events coordinating all functions materials and assets
- Support development of relationships with U.S. Military local community leaders partners donors and media representatives
- Coordinate resources including volunteers materials and supplies for programs events and activities
- Communicate key information to volunteers maintain volunteer database and oversee volunteer participation
- Direct prospective volunteers through application process help coordinate on the job training implement volunteer recognition events
- May operate USO or personal motor vehicle
- Perform other duties as assigned including backfilling for Center Operations Manager or other positions
