This job posting seeks to fill the role of a Physician within the Colorado Department of Corrections. The physician position is essential in delivering both routine and emergency medical care to inmates across state correctional facilities. Physicians assigned to this role are responsible for conducting thorough medical and physical examinations; ordering, interpreting diagnostic tests; and diagnosing a broad spectrum of medical conditions. A key component of this role includes prescribing medications and treatments, educating inmates on preventive health care, and performing minor medical procedures on-site as needed. Additionally, physicians supervise the clinical work of Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants by providing direct line authority, guidance, clinical supervision, consultation, and professional development support to ensure quality care standards are maintained.

Physicians in this role manage daily patient caseloads encompassing chronic care, sick calls, emergencies, and routine physical exams. The position also involves being part of the monthly on-call schedule across various DOC clinical units and facilities to provide immediate assistance when staffing needs arise. This role is collaborative, requiring the physician to instruct and train other healthcare professionals, provide consultative advice to healthcare specialties, and contribute to management decisions on medical program development, treatment standards, and clinical protocols. Accurate and timely documentation is critical, including computer data entry, referrals, consultations, medical reporting, co-signatures, and inmate grievance responses in compliance with administrative regulations, policies, state statutes, and medical directives.

The ideal candidate is board eligible or board certified in a relevant medical specialty recognized by the American Medical Association, such as Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, or Preventive Medicine. A valid Colorado medical license as an M.D. or D.O. is mandatory, along with a DEA license. The position requires strong competencies including the ability to deliver direct patient care in a complex and potentially stressful environment, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse population of inmates and stakeholders. Candidates should be ready to work various shifts including days, afternoons, and nights with required participation in basic training and physical competencies suitable for correctional facility environments.
