The Commercial Driver position at WM involves operating heavy-duty trucks equipped with various lift attachments suited to their operational line of business. Drivers are responsible for transporting waste or recyclable materials safely and efficiently to designated disposal, transfer, or recycling facilities. This role includes maneuvering heavy containers that can exceed 1,000 pounds and requires skilled navigation through high-traffic areas, alleyways, residential streets, and industrial routes. Different driver roles include Commercial Drivers who pick up waste or recyclable containers, Residential Drivers who manage residential household waste collection, and Roll-off Drivers who handle large mobile open-top or compactor containers.
This position is essential to WM's operations and requires adherence to strict safety protocols outlined by OSHA, DOT, and internal WM safety rules. Drivers perform pre- and post-trip inspections, maintain clear communication with operations managers and dispatch, and ensure customer sites are left clean and free of debris. The role requires handling service interruptions with professionalism and assisting fellow drivers to meet customer demands. Job Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age and legally eligible to work in the country where the position is located
- One year operating a vehicle requiring a CDL or one year equivalent military driving within the last 7 years
- Able to read, write, and speak English well enough to interact with the public, understand traffic signs, respond to official questions, and complete records or reports
- Successfully complete pre-employment screening including drug screen and physical
- Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A with an air-brake endorsement or Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B with an air-brake endorsement
Job Qualifications
- Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A with an air-brake endorsement or Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B with an air-brake endorsement
- One year operating a vehicle requiring a CDL or one year equivalent military driving within the last 7 years
- Able to read, write, and speak English well enough to interact with the public, understand traffic signs, respond to official questions, and complete records or reports
- Must be at least 18 years of age and legally eligible to work in the country where the position is located
- Successfully complete pre-employment screening including drug screen and physical
- High School Diploma or GED (preferred)
Job Duties
- Operate vehicle in accordance with Waste Management Safety and Life Critical Rules, OSHA and DOT requirements as well as all local, state and federal laws
- Perform pre and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicle and document checks utilizing the standard DVIR
- Immediately report all unsafe situations or service-related issues to Operations Manager or Dispatch
- Attend and participate in all scheduled training programs, briefings, and meetings as required by WM or directed by the Route Manager
- Work closely with Operations Manager to improve route efficiencies and identify best practices
- Notify Operations Manager of any incidents, accidents, injuries, or property damage
- Notify Operations Manager or Dispatch of service interruptions including closed or impassable streets or alleyways, receptacles too heavy to service or potential safety hazards
- Communicate customer requests to Operations Manager or Dispatch
- Completely dump all receptacles and leave the customer’s location clean and free of debris
- Follow route assignments as directed and complete end-of-day documentation and check-out process
- Perform all duties as scheduled by Operations Manager or Dispatch and assist other drivers as directed to meet customer needs
