The Swing Driver role at GFL Environmental involves the safe operation of various vehicle types, including Front End, Roll Off, Residential, and other trucks, serving customers through different collection methods effectively and efficiently. As a Swing Driver, the incumbent is responsible for delivering collected solid waste or recyclables to landfills, Material Recovery Facilities (MRF), or transfer stations while maintaining consistent service by filling in for various routes as needed. This role requires flexibility, physical stamina, and an unwavering commitment to safety and professionalism. Attention to detail in completing inspections and paperwork, maintaining vehicle cleanliness, and adhering to company safety policies are essential components of this position. Swing Drivers also manage helpers when applicable, provide training assistance to other drivers, and ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree desired
  • Must have a valid Commercial Driver's License
  • Minimum one year of commercial driving experience or possession of CDL school certificate
  • Must meet relevant safety sensitive function criteria according to company standards
  • Must demonstrate ability to safely operate truck and equipment

  • Ability to safely operate trucks and associated equipment
  • Knowledge of truck components and basic maintenance requirements
  • Effective communication skills with internal and external customers
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend related documents and maps
  • Strong commitment to following safety policies and procedures
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing conditions and continuous improvement mindset
  • Physical ability to lift, push, pull or carry objects up to 50 pounds repeatedly using proper techniques
  • Ability to coordinate two or more limbs while sitting or standing

Job Duties

  • Operate one or more vehicle types with automatic and standard transmission and collect solid waste, yard waste and/or recyclables on varying routes
  • Complete pre-trip and post-trip safety lane inspections and daily reports
  • Communicate vehicle mechanical problems to mechanic and supervisor promptly
  • Use prescribed techniques to operate truck and equipment safely and avoid mechanical failures
  • Follow all safety standards and comply with federal, state, provincial, local and company safety and vehicle operation regulations
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness including cab interior and exterior
  • Manage assigned Helpers if applicable
  • Report all accidents or incidents immediately to supervisor
  • Exhibit professional demeanor, manner and appearance while in uniform or interacting with customers
  • Maintain accurate records of services performed
  • Perform extra or special pick-ups as required
  • Assist with training other Drivers as needed
  • Attend safety and branch meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management
