The CDL Route Driver role based in Portsmouth, VA, is an essential position within Airgas responsible for the safe transportation, loading, and unloading of compressed gas cylinders between various branches and plant locations. This full-time, Monday through Friday position starts early at 6 am and ensures that the driver returns home daily, maintaining a work-life balance that supports personal and family needs. The role involves operating large commercial vehicles, maintaining rigorous safety standards, and adhering strictly to hazardous material handling protocols.

Job Requirements

  • Must have a valid Class A or B CDL
  • Valid Medical Examiner's Card
  • Must have the Hazmat Endorsement or be able to obtain the endorsement within 60 days of being hired
  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Must have at least 1 year of verifiable commercial driving experience within the last 5 years
  • Successful completion of Airgas Background and Motor Vehicle Check
  • DOT Clearinghouse verification from previous employers
  • Ability to routinely lift or move around 25 - 75 lbs, and occasionally lift 76 to greater than 100 lbs
  • Willingness to work outdoors in changing temperatures
  • Ability to maintain a drug-free workplace
  • Adherence to safety regulations and policies
  • Flexible to work overtime as needed

Job Qualifications

  • Forklift experience preferred
  • Touch freight delivery experience preferred
  • Prior experience in the gas, welding and safety supply industry preferred

Job Duties

  • Safely load, deliver, and unload cylinders containing compressed gases and liquids between Airgas branches and plant locations
  • Maintain accurate load manifests and vehicle documents, ensuring proper completion and balance with truck counts and shipping documents
  • Record all deliveries and pickups, return empty cylinders for refilling
  • Professionally interact with associates and customers to resolve service inquiries and issues
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and cylinder inspections per operating procedures
  • Ensure all safety rules are strictly observed and promptly report any accidents or injuries to management
  • Provide timely updates to the manager regarding any operational changes or issues
  • Operate pallet jacks, forklifts, and other warehouse equipment
  • Work in the warehouse or on the dock as required
