Job Description

Airgas, an Air Liquide company, is a prominent U.S. supplier specializing in industrial, medical, and specialty gases along with hardgoods and related products. It stands as one of the largest safety products suppliers in the United States and a leading provider of ammonia products and process chemicals. With a workforce of 18,000 associates, Airgas fosters a culture rooted in safety, customer success, sustainability, and innovation, encouraging employees to contribute ideas, take initiative, and make impactful decisions. As a subsidiary of Air Liquide—a global leader operating in 60 countries with about 66,500 employees—Airgas serves over four million customers and patients, supporting a broad range of industrial and healthcare needs across the nation.

Airgas is currently seeking a CDL Class B Route Driver for its Portsmouth, VA location to fill an industrial sector role. This position involves the responsible management of delivering compressed gases and liquids safely and efficiently between various Airgas branches and plant locations. The employment type is full-time with a comprehensive benefits package and opportunities for career growth in a company that values diversity, inclusion, and employee well-being.

In this dynamic role, the CDL Class B Route Driver will be tasked with the safe loading, transportation, and unloading of cylinders containing compressed gases while adhering to all federal and company safety regulations. The driver will maintain accurate documentation, including load manifests and vehicle paperwork, ensuring inventory and shipments are balanced and properly recorded. There is a strong emphasis on maintaining positive interactions with both customers and associates, resolving service inquiries professionally, and supporting warehouse or dock operations as needed.

Safety is paramount, so pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, as well as cylinder safety checks, form an integral part of the driver’s responsibilities. The role requires the ability to update managers promptly about any operational issues or changes in delivery schedules. Operation of warehouse equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks is also part of the daily duties, requiring flexibility and hands-on involvement.

Candidates must possess a valid Class A driver’s license with a Hazmat endorsement, a valid Medical Examiner's Card, and meet specific DOT regulations, including background checks and drug-free workplace adherence. The job demands physical stamina to lift heavy loads occasionally and the willingness to work in various weather conditions. Previous experience in professional driving, particularly in the gas, welding, or safety supply industries, is preferred but not mandatory.

Airgas is known for offering extensive benefits that support not only work-life balance but also long-term security, including medical, dental, vision insurance, life and disability insurance, paid parental leave, holidays, vacation, sick leave, and a 401(k) plan with company matching. The company encourages a collaborative and inclusive workplace environment where each individual’s differences are celebrated as key contributors to organizational success and innovation. As an equal opportunity employer, Airgas welcomes candidates from all backgrounds to apply and become part of a community committed to safety, customer satisfaction, and employee growth.
