Currently, W.O. Grubb is seeking a dedicated CDL Class A Truck Driver specialized in heavy equipment hauling to join its Richmond, VA team. This full-time, hourly position offers competitive pay in the range of $25.00 to $35.00 per hour and reports directly to the Operations Manager. The role entails safely transporting cranes, heavy machinery, and other large equipment primarily using tractor-trailer combinations. The CDL Class A Truck Driver will be fundamentally responsible for ensuring the safe loading, securing, transport, and unloading of heavy equipment while complying with federal and state laws, including all Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements.

The role requires individuals who are committed to meticulous vehicle inspection and maintenance pre- and post- trip, maintaining accurate logs of working hours and vehicle status, and constantly adhering to safety protocols to mitigate risks on the road. Candidates must be prepared for extensive driving, including long hours spent sitting as well as frequent standing and moving activities associated with loading and unloading cargo.

Additionally, this position demands a keen understanding of routing logistics, with drivers utilizing GPS and other digital navigation tools to optimize fuel consumption and delivery efficiency. Candidates will also interact closely with dispatchers, managers, customers, and fellow drivers via CB radios and telephones to coordinate operations effectively.

The nature of the job might expose the driver to extreme external temperatures and fluctuating noise levels, necessitating the adaptation to working conditions while complying with all OSHA safety standards. Seasonal or holiday work may be required, adding some variability to the schedule.

Job Requirements

Job Duties

  • Maneuver tractor and trailers into loading or unloading positions following signals from loading crew and checking vehicle and equipment positioning
  • Collect delivery instructions verifying routes and instructions
  • Maintain logs of working hours and vehicle service status per state and federal regulations
  • Check mechanical safety and emergency equipment condition before driving
  • Report defects, accidents, traffic violations, or damage to tractor or trailer
  • Secure equipment for transport using ropes, chains, binders, or covers
  • Drive tractor and trailer to weigh stations before and after loading to comply with regulations
  • Transport and deliver products, cranes, or heavy equipment driving trucks over 3 tons capacity
  • Obtain receipts or signatures for completed delivery services
  • Follow safety procedures for transporting heavy and oversized loads
  • Use CB radios and telephones to exchange information with dispatcher, branch manager, or other drivers
  • Perform basic vehicle maintenance like adding oil, fuel, radiator fluid, or minor repairs
  • Inspect load condition before and after transport
  • Check trailers post unloading for damage
  • Read bills of lading to verify shipment details
  • Ensure all load documentation is complete and accurate
  • Plan or adjust routes using GPS or other navigation tools to reduce fuel consumption
  • Load and unload trucks assisting others with special loading equipment
  • Adhere to OSHA, state, and federal safety regulations
  • Comply with random D.O.T drug screens and testing
  • Maintain a valid CDL Class A driver’s license
  • Obey all traffic laws including speed limits and stop signs
  • Follow company dress code
  • Be punctual and courteous to customers, coworkers, and all contacts
  • Perform other duties as assigned
