The role of CDL Class A Driver at PMI Pipe Steel & Supplies is crucial to the company's ongoing success. This position involves operating tractor-trailer trucks with gross combined vehicle weights of over 26,000 pounds while ensuring load safety, adhering to logistical schedules, and maintaining compliance with all transportation laws. A CDL Class A driver will be responsible for transporting heavy materials safely and on time to various destinations. This includes maneuvering trucks and trailers skillfully into loading and unloading zones, securing cargo appropriately, and maintaining detailed delivery and vehicle inspection records. Additionally, drivers will coordinate closely with branch managers, warehouse personnel, and the Safety, Equipment, Fleet & Facility (SEFF) Coordinator to ensure equipment upkeep and troubleshoot any operational issues. This role requires a professional approach that encompasses customer service skills, safety priorities, and a strong understanding of vehicle operation within varying weather and road conditions. Employment is full-time, with a day shift schedule from Monday through Friday, providing stable working hours.

In addition to the operational responsibilities, drivers are expected to maintain physical fitness to manage lifting duties of up to 80 pounds and endure the demands of prolonged sitting and frequent travel. Job Requirements

  • Must be 25 years of age for insurance purposes to operate equipment
  • Must hold required valid CDL
  • Must pass background and drug testing as required by federal and/or state department(s) of transportation regulations
  • Clean driving record with no moving violations
  • Experience operating warehouse equipment
  • Ability to lift and move up to 80 pounds
  • Must be able to travel frequently
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to squat, twist, reach and stand/walk for an entire workday
  • Ability to work in Texas weather including heat, cold, dust, and rain

Job Duties

  • Understand PMI Pipe Steel & Supplies mission statement
  • Drive vehicles with a Gross Combined Vehicle Weight (GVW) over 26,000 lbs or more if the GVWR of the vehicle(s) towed exceeds 10,000 pounds
  • Operate a semi-truck according to applicable state and federal transportation laws
  • Transport loads safely and in a timely manner over required route, obeying all traffic laws and observing all safety regulations
  • Ensure trailer hitch is properly and securely attached to tractor unit
  • Maneuver truck and trailer into loading and unloading areas, following loading crew signals
  • Assist with loading or load and unload goods and materials using specialized equipment when warranted
  • Position blocks and tie ropes/straps around items to secure cargo for transport
  • Collect and verify delivery instructions
  • Communicate with branch manager, sales, and warehouse manager as needed
  • Complete logs for inventory, vehicles or deliveries as required
  • Perform inspections of vehicle prior to start and end of day
  • Maintain signed invoices, shipping bills of lading, and other required paperwork
  • Communicate with SEFF Coordinator for routine service on trucks
  • Report maintenance defects/malfunctions, accidents, or violations immediately to SEFF Coordinator
  • Track and report working hours on Fleetmatics tablet
  • Arrange trailers in shipping yards for optimum loading patterns
  • Adhere to company rules and regulations
  • Comply with DOT regulations
  • Obey all applicable traffic laws and drive according to weather/road conditions
  • Always make safety a priority
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
